ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Bassist Tommy Cecil and pianist Bill Mays explore the songs of Broadway giant Stephen Sondheim. Their previous recording won the praise of bloggers and critics from both jazz and theater, for its fresh, insightful and engaging approach, and "Our Time/Sondheim Duos, Volume 2" continues. Tommy and Bill play together empathetically and spontaneously. Stephen Sondheim is better known for his brilliant lyrics than for his hummable melodies, and the conventional wisdom is that Sondheim songs need to be sung to be appreciated. "Sondheim Duos" proves that wrong. While his lyrics are integral, his music stands on its own with a highly personal rhythmic, lyrical and dramatic style. "Our Time/Sondheim Duos, Volume 2" reveals in an affectionate and compelling way, the great melodies and unique musical character of Stephen Sondheim.

From Broadway to Jazz Repertoire-Stephen Sondheim Songs

Tommy Cecil, bassist from Washington and the New York pianist, Bill Mays are veterans of the current jazz scene. Mays has worked with more than 150 singers (read his amusing biography, "Stories From The Road" http://www.billmays.net/discography.html)). After the highly successful "SIde By Side" with 9 songs written by Stephen Sondheim, the two artists continue with "Our Time"-11 more melodious tracks of the great Broadway composer which will hopefully find their way in the repertoire of jazz musicians. Excellently arranged, interpreted and recorded, the duo presents the finest chamber jazz.

Vom Broadway ins Jazzrepertoire – Stephen Sondheims Songs
