ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Navaz is based on a collaboration between guitarist Eric Tompkins and Persian vocalist Neda Jalali. Eric's experience playing jazz and Latin genres, his compositional skills and his passion for Eastern music perfectly compliments Neda's exotic singing. Originally from Iran, Neda Jalali lived for many years in Washington DC and London, England where she performed Persian standards and traditional music. She frequently shared the stage with well known Iranian performers such as Hayedeh, Aslani, Moen and Layla. In June 2006 she met Eric and has since moved to Canada. Soon after, Navaz was formed. Although most of the time Navaz is a duo, the band often expands to include trumpet, bass, drums and tenor sax. Their sound evokes the sensuous music of Miles Davis or Charles Mingus, often with a Latin flavor. Underlying their sound is the traditional and contemporary music of Persia - from the poetry of Rumi and Hafez to the sensuous ballads of Googoosh. As their name suggests - Navaz translates from Farsi as "a soothing melody" - the music will make you want to dance or take you on an exotic journey to far away places.
