ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I was born in Savannah, GA, raised on nearby Tybee Island, and moved to Nashville in 1986 to pursue songwriting. I am fortunate to have written for some of my favorites in my time here including Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless, Bonnie Raitt, Lee Roy Parnell, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Delbert McClinton, Reba McEntire, Suzy Bogguss, Don Williams and Hal Ketchum. Some of the songs on this album you'll recognize, and some of them are still looking for a home; but I am grateful for every one of them and for the good people to whom they've led me.

Tony is awesome - singer, performer and writer extraordinaire
We make it a point to hear Tony in Nashville whenever and wherever he performs. His songs are among the very best that are being written today and his voice is remarkable..clear, deep, unaffected, and just downright beautiful. His guitar playing is outstanding and his guitar and his vocal melody are perfectly in complement. If it sounds like we are devoted fans, then you get the idea. This is a CD that keeps getting put in our top rotation, month after month. Just can't get enough of him. His songs have style, depth and character. He is a poet, an artist and a beautiful soul, which all come through when he sings his own songs. He has penned hits for some of our biggest stars, but there is nothing that compares to his singing his songs himself.

Thanks for the Tony Arata shout-out, Keith Urban
First of all... Tony is one of my all time favorites... his songs grab hold of my heart and drag it around like it's on a leash! I consider myself to be a harsh critic, and I judge with my heart first and my head second. Tony's songs echo through heat, my head, my gut... to the tips of my fingers and toes. We met Tony by pure luck at "Swallow at the Hollow" in Roswell, GA where he and other Bluebird Cafe regulars occasionally trek south to perform a similar songwriters' showcase. We were so knocked out by his music that we bought this CD on the spot, and Tony was gracious enough to autograph it. To give you an idea of how much we value that CD, my wife was recently in a car accident in Houston... and returned to Atlanta thinking we would get the car back after repairs. However, the insurance agency decided to "total" the car, which was bad enough... but then we realized that Tony was in the CD changer! We hounded the shop for a month to send us the CD's, with Tony's being the driving force, until we finally got them back. Whew! The reason for my post here thanking Keith Urban was because of his clarification on American Idol this week... the theme was "songs I wish I'd have written", and we were thrilled when Janelle sang "The Dance"! But the credit for writing the song was repeatedly given to Garth.... until Keith Urban set everyone straight and told the world who REALLY wrote it. Thank you, Tony, for "The Dance"... and for all of the other "Way Back When" gems... my favorite is "To the Other Side"...

Beautiful songs from a beautiful writer.
You may not know of Tony Arata's songs if you haven't read the credits to the songs on half of Nashville's top stars, but you should learn about them now. Arata combines candor and intelligence with tender sentiment and hope. No wonder he is so revered among songsmiths.

Way Back When
This is a quiet and unassuming gem from a songwriter gifted with insight and a rare talent for evoking emotion without being maudlin. Not the world's greatest voice, but he sings with feeling and restraint, which some more famous singers could learn from. This is one I will come back to, just as I still listen to his "Changes" LP from back in '84. Nice to have another recording from Tony.
