Album Notes
From Desert Blues (track 1) to Sail Away (track 26), Jimmy Rogers to Kenny Rogers, Arizona to Alaska, join me on a musical journey as we make more songs from the catalogue of Sylvantone Records available for digital download.
‘Love Me Tender’ was the first song I ever recorded back in January 1957. Thankfully, I chose a more recent recording of the song to include as track 5. I visited Hawaii in 1958, and in 1988 on my ‘Round the World’ singing tour, but the backing for track 9 was done in Arthur Smith’s studio in Charlotte, North Carolina, not in Hawaii. We also visit Texas with Stu Page (track 13), and for a bit of humour, Australia (track 10) and the Social Clubs of the U.K. (track 20)
I always loved the sound of a Hawaiian guitar, and for many years Arthur Layfield could be heard on stage alongside me from the mid 1960’s to well into the 1990’s. His magic touch can be heard on many of my early recordings, including track 16, ‘Why Should I Be so Lonely’ (1974) and ‘ track 3 ‘Teardrop on a Rose’ (1976). But Arthur plays his trombone on Track 1 – after all, brass could be heard on many Jimmy Rogers recordings.
Pedal steel guitar from Sonny Garrish, Derek Thurlby and Maurice Hipkiss can be heard on several tracks, along with the fiddle of Gerry Hale and Maurice Hipkiss. Also, listen out for keyboard from Don Ange and Bunky Keels, and the lead guitar of Steve Isherwood, Stu Page, Gregg Galbraith and Bill Clarke. For a full list of musicians and track listings on the original recordings between 1974 and 2004, go to the CD's and DVD's page of my website.
Pete Sayers wrote the song ‘Thanks to the Hanks’ specially for me as the title track of my 1976 album, and it is Pete playing his trusty Martin guitar on the intro to track 2. He also features on dobro on track 3.
I wanted to include tracks from albums I produced by Stu Page, Jeannie Dee and her husband Duncan, as a ‘taster’ of more tracks from these hugely talented singers I’ll make available in the future.
In a country music career spanning over sixty years, I have taken my music worldwide, appearing at major festivals and venues in Australia and New Zealand, including Tamworth, Mildura, Parkes, Auckland and Noosa Heads. In the U.S.A. my appearances include the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Wheeling Jamboree in West Virginia, The Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree, the Grapevine Opry in Texas, as well as other venues in Maryland, Ohio, North Carolina and West Virginia.
In the 1980's and 1990's, I also appeared at most of the leading country music festivals in Britain, including Wembley, Brighton, Peterborough and Yorkshire, and the world famous London Palladium, as well as many more festivals and major events in Holland, Switzerland, and Germany
Although I recently retired from full time life 'on the road' and make the occasional live appearance at Paul Wheater's annual Whitby Gospel Music Convention, you can still enjoy my music by downloading nearly 200 of my songs from or their partner companies, listening to my albums, or watching my many video clips on YouTube.
Thank you for your support over many years. Tony Goodacre, March 2017.
