ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I started writing songs in 1979 and I've been creating music since that time. I started playing shows with my son Matt in 2002. Matt was the force behind me starting to perform on a regular basis. He is the one that encouraged me to put together these songs that became Dark Third. Much of the music on Dark Third was written in natural settings. I have been inspired in the Chequamegon National Forest in Northern Wisconsin, Lake Superior, The Rocky Mountains, and countless quiet places near my cabin. I've had the rare opportunity to spend several weeks over the past few years at a Songwriter's retreat on Mallard Island. Mallard Island is on Rainy Lake in Northern Minnesota and is one of the most amazing places I've ever been.

I enjoy playing shows but some of the best musical memories I have are sitting around the campfire playing guitar and singing songs with my family. My daughter Käri playing guitar and singing with me, Matt playing flute or quiet saxophone lines, my son Alex on djembe, and my wife Lorrie and daughter Onah singing along.

The songs on Dark Third have evolved in the studio from the relatively quiet pieces they were born as. The artists on this album injected a different energy and power that really elevated these little songs to a new level. Matt's horn lines rival any I've heard on any "popular" or "indie" music anywhere and John Nietz could be playing guitar with anyone, anywhere. I'm grateful all these artists chose to play with me on Dark Third. Evan Middlesworth's production skills are incredible and we fully expect to see him recording for some Grammy winners in the near future.

Here is an excerpt from the album jacket:
Special thanks to all the musicians on this album. It has been a thrill to play and create with such an amazing group of people. Thanks to my wife Lorrie for her support & patience for all those late nights at the studio & for giving me a reason to write these songs. And it is a gift to have Matt and Käri work with me on this project. Matt is an amazing help & inspiration to me in my musical development & I can't even express how much I appreciate Käri's poetry and creative spirit. I also want to express my love & gratitude for my son Alex & my daughter Onah. While they don't show up in these recordings their energy & presence live throughout these songs.

None of this would have been possible without Evan. His guidance. leadership, technical skills, & understanding of what I wanted to create, made this all happen. One final thanks to Gordy Bischoff for the amazing guitar he made for me all those years ago. Double Eye is dedicated to Gordy.
