Album Notes
Tony Thompson Jazz! is first and foremost a recording of the Tony Thompson Trio featuring Tony on piano. But that is not all it is. This collection represents a sound that was 20 years in the making. The bassist is Peter Innocenti, a dedicated jazz bassist who comes from a tradition of more contemporary players from the city; his sound is on par with other contemporary bass players of the New York area. On drums, Andy Trexler plays exquisite complimentary grooves that help take the music to another plane; the way that the rhythms breathe and the sense that you get in this music that the end results exceed the sum of it's parts. The collection of modal jazz flavors, the Hard Bop influence, the near Ballad and Blues feel of some of the standards- all of these things have been carefully cultivated. To achieve the highest results, there are guests for some tracks on the sax and guitar as well as percussion on the Sting tune, 'Fragile'. There are Tony's vocal renditions on a couple of tracks as well and for the first time. In this recording you see a great deal of variety in the styles and the possibilities of the music.
