Album Notes
Toomai String Quintet's debut album, Cuerdas Cubanas, celebrates Cuba’s rich musical legacy through a quintessential collection of songs cast into modern string arrangements. Joined by vocalist Alina Roitstein, Toomai performs works by Ernesto Lecuona as well as salsa, bolero, and mambo classics. This recording is an indispensable, timely, and culturally relevant addition to the string ensemble chamber music repertoire.

This New York-based quintet reimagines a variety of Cuban styles in eleven inventive arrangements that are rooted in traditional rhythms and passionate melodies. Executed with exuberance and virtuosity, the album pays homage to the great artistic lineage of Lecuona, Israel "Cachao" López, Beny Moré, and Celia Cruz. Alina Roitstein lends her dynamic voice to several tracks to represent the spirit of the great Cuban-American Songbook.

The inspiration for Cuerdas Cubanas stems from Toomai’s bassist Andrew Roitstein, a Cuban-American who grew up listening to his grandmother play many of Lecuona’s pieces on the piano. Since 2007, Toomai has consistently incorporated Cuban music into their concerts and educational work. This album is a culmination of these projects.
