Album Notes

Mark Roebuck, formerly of the 80s power-pop band the Deal, began work on Tribe of Heaven in 1989. He invited then fellow bartender Dave Matthews to assist him in writing and recording a CD-length project. Tribe of Heaven would produce a rich, folk-acoustic sound, woven with dark, sometimes melancholy themes.

The Tribe of Heaven project included nine songs, five written by Mark Roebuck alone, three written by Mark Roebuck and Dave Matthews together, and one a cover of U2's "In God's Country." Mark and Dave both sang and played on all songs. Greg Howard added keyboards on "Imagine We Were" and "Half the Time." Mike Rosenski played guitar on "Touch." The recording was done locally in Scottsville, Virginia on 8 track reel to reel at the home studio of Greg Howard during two sessions separated by about 6 months.

Tribe of Heaven was informally shopped around in early 1990, but without success. Dave would go on to form Dave Matthews Band the next year and include a Tribe of Heaven song, "The Song that Jane Likes," on the band's first release, Remember Two Things.

The Tribe of Heaven project lay dormant for more than a decade until a revival of interest in Mark's various musical projects, and interest from Dave's fans, led to this release.

for all dmb fans; very quick delivery
Every DMB fan should have this! A lot like CSNY CD Baby was very quick w/ the delivery too.

great freakin' album!!!
their voices compliment each other like no other!

Matt Hill

I enjoyed this cd profusely. Great stuff.

A "why not have" for any serious Dave fan
While this record itself may not be something DMB-ers will keep in their player at all times, it is interesting to hear some of the work Dave was involved with at the beginning of his career.

If you own everything from Remember Two Things to Stand Up, you should certainly have this disc in your collection!

I Love Tribe of Heaven
If you are a Dave Matthews fan, you will love this CD. It's great to hear Dave in his earlier years. Perfect CD to sit back, close your eyes, and fall into.

eerie and impressive
brendan is right when he says this is a dark piece of music-it is often eerie and a bit unsettling-but it stays with you and is also often catchy and i'm playing it over and over and over...

Music worth replay
Thank you cdbaby, this was a great cd and to my pleasure you folks had it in stock. As far as the transaction was concerned, thank you for the informative and amusing emails while I waited for confirmations of a cd sent lightning swift! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In response to a listener review I say to the interested that this is a great cd purchase who want to listen to Dave in his most raw and most oldschool setting. It's a very intimate cd, and not a difficult listen either. It's as smooth as any of Dave's softer cds, and if you don't know of Mark Robuck, know that he and Dave compliment eachother very well, and Mark Robuck on his own is worthy of all the adoration he has in his dedicated followers... and is one of those gems that we don't hear much about in our everyday music. In short this cd is good for anyone looking for wholesome good music. I just dare you to pick it up!

This is a GREAT album!! It's nice to heard Dave in his early years!!

more than worth the couple bucks & i'm a penny-pincher
If you like acoustic singer/songwriter music than this CD is for you. It is not a rock-out CD but a sitback and chillout one that has great harmonies, great lyrics (#9: subway is my favorite), and an overall great raw sound. You cannot go wrong with dropping a couple bucks for this CD.

It is a good Mix. Dave sounds awesome on it!
