Album Notes
Trio Encompas recorded their debut, self-titled album as part of The Wire magazine's RPM CHALLENGE. The goal of the challenge was simple -- record an album in one month, start to finish. This recording is much of the same material recorded in a live show sponsored by The Wire magazine. The energy was high that evening and the band claimed quite a few visitors to the Vaughan Mall.

Cadence (Brad Winter)

Expansive, creative, this is an enjoyable release.
TRIO ENCOMPAS... occupies a middle ground between ensembles like the DKV Trio and Mark Helias' Open Loose. LIVE ON THE VAUGHAN MALL (Avant Coast 4) is a vigorous performance of tunes... that--as noted below--seem to be the trio's staples. The group plays expansively, creatively, and with good humor as well. Keith sounds especially lusty on his baritone on the opener. But they sound most at home, and convincing, on slinky mid-tempo tenor numbers like Yrrehs Mas and the wonderfully grooving Seafoam. At times the material is a bit too similar but this is an enjoyable release.

Excellent mix of energy/personality, and talent heard from Trio Encompas........The tone and technique of the saxes are right on.......true professional sound coming from the bassist, reminds me of W. Parker!.......Great drumming! Playing live is all about communicating with each other, and that is what I hear on this cd, great stuff!
