ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Recorded in Trondheim's historic Gothic church, built in 1070, this Christmas program showcases the St. Olaf Choir, the Nidarosdomens jentekor (Nidaros Cathedral's girls' choir). The beautiful a cappella voices of the St. Olaf Choir, conducted by Anton Armstrong, and the Nidarosdomens jentekor, conducted by Vivianne Sydnes, are joined by the noted Norwegian mezzo soprano Randi Stene.

This Christmas concert commemorates the centennial of Norway's independence and celebrates the cultural roots of St. Olaf College, founded in 1874 by Norwegian Lutheran immigrants. Singing in the majestic 900-year-old Nidaros Cathedral was a highlight for the internationally known St. Olaf Choir, which has performed in prestigious music venues around the world since its founding in 1912 by F. Melius Christiansen, a Norwegian immigrant. Christiansen established the choir's distinctive style of a cappella singing, a tradition carried on today by artistic director and conductor - and St. Olaf College alumnus - Anton Armstrong.

In June 2005, the St. Olaf Choir, the Nidarosdomens jentekor, and Randi Stene taped a one-hour television special titled A St. Olaf Christmas in Norway, produced by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) in cooperation with Twin Cities Public Television (TPT). The program aired throughout Scandinavia and the United States during the 2005 Christmas season. This CD contains the complete broadcast program plus seven additional songs.

A St. Olaf Christmas in Norway is a co-production of St. Olaf College and NRK, the public broadcasting network of Norway, in association with Twin Cities Public Television, based in St. Paul, Minnesota.
