ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
During the process of compiling the selections in this second volume, against the backdrop of the genesis of some recent pessimism that is afoot, I’ve once again been witness to the cooperative spirit, energetic productivity, and artistic merit of the Jazz community in the Twin Cities. For each contributing artist or ensemble that space allowed for this time, there was at least one other interesting release that had to be passed over for this sampler volume. There just isn’t enough space on these CDs to cover all the worthy possibilities that have emerged since Volume One was released a few years ago. It also needs to be said that there were numerous well-positioned offerings left out of the first volume for the same logistical and practical reasons. I wonder if it makes sense having the choices for Inclusion in future sampler volumes subject to some kind of knowledgeable committee of peers. Let’s hope that the momentum around the Twin Cities Jazz Sampler volumes and the individual recording releases they champion continues to grow to the point where any one person would no longer be comfortable as the sole curator. For now, with the direct support of this project’s many Contributors, Boosters, Backers and Executive Producers I’ve once again narrowed it down to (this time) 14 tracks ranging from Solo releases to 7-piece working groups and almost every size ensemble in between.
As I’ve said before, I hope this sampler will drive more audience members toward seeking out and purchasing the source recordings represented herein. There are indeed many gems on those ‘sides’ that could have easily taken the place of the selected track on this sampler, and as much fun as it is to hear this cross-section of tracks compiled together, it is no substitute for digging deeper into the source recordings, and hearing each artist’s or ensemble’s vision for how the tracks on their releases flow as a cohesive set of music. And remember, these ensembles are all active on the Jazz Scene right now as working units that you can easily hear live periodically, and this can only continue if audiences keep showing up and supporting these performances too. So while I hope you will enjoy this volume, I also look forward to seeing some of you at these group’s live shows soon.
