Album Notes
Narration By Top Cat.
This album is dedicated to Tenor Fly. It's the last project that we did together as the Two Veterans. In a career that spanned nearly 30 years as professional emcees we both linked up and started working together on Sir Coxsone Outernational sound from Brixton, south London back in 1989 after we both scored number one records in the UK reggae charts. Tenor Fly also started to work with Rebel MC aka Congo Natty during this time and scored 3 top 20 national chart hits with him. We toured on Sir Coxsone sound for 3 years before we joined Fashion Records and started to regularly record for the label. During this time we scored numerous hits in the UK reggae charts.
In 1994 we both left Fashion Records and I formed my label 9 Lives Records. Tenor Fly was one of the first artists on the label. We dominated the reggae charts in 1994 with a string of top 3 tunes and two number 1 singles that topped the reggae charts for 19 weeks This was also the year that jungle music rose from the underground. Both Tenor Fly and myself recorded jungle tracks for Congo Natty during this time that are now regarded as classics. Fashion Records also brought in the top jungle producers to remix my reggae hits which further enhanced my catalogue of jungle hits. Due to Fashion Records and Gussie P Records releasing the vocal a capellas with their records many of the early jungle tracks featured bootleg versions of both Tenor Fly and Top Cat's tunes. One of these tunes that Top Cat bootlegged back and claimed also went to number 1 in the jungle charts for 9 weeks in 1994.
Towards the end of the 90's Tenor Fly teamed up with former Congo Natty engineer Aston to form the group The FreeStylers and they had success in the UK National Charts. Top Cat teamed up with the up and coming duo Double 99 and had the first UK Garage record to enter the UK National Charts.
Towards the mid 2000's Tenor Fly and Top Cat returned to action after taking a few years break and scored hits in the DnB charts with Shy FX (Champion DJ and Everyday) and Pendulum (Tarantula, alongside MC Spyda).
Reforming the label once again Top Cat produced the album "Two Veterans" that featured Tenor Fly and Top Cat. The album did well and the name ended up being used as the brand for when Tenor Fly and Top Cat worked together. As the Two Veterans Tenor Fly and Top Cat toured the US, Canada, Eastern and Western Europe bringing their unique brand of emceeing to the world for the next 10 years.
In June 2016 Tenor Fly passed away while we were making plans to complete this album and do an extensive world tour. Although that will not happen now, this album is now released in Tenor Fly's honor and he lives on in spirit and through his music.
