Album Notes
Hello. It’s hard writing this up without sounding like a pretentious dork, but I’m going to give it a try. I’ve been trying to work out my solo piano sound for about 20 years now. It’s a collection of bits of different sounds, sometimes quoting/covering, sometimes not, with many devised common refrains and elements, always derivative (and that’s ok by me). For years now I’ve been trying to let go of learned patterns, meters and rhythms - if you need those things, any modern pop radio channel will suffice. There is a constant tug of war between using something I perceive as “new” and being derivative. I’ve come to accept this as normal. I’m also still stuck on the Gamelan sound from a group I played with 25 years ago. That beautiful noise has been bouncing around the inside of my head for 25 trips around the sun. I’m ever influenced by Wagner, Hindemith, Debussy, Basie, Ellington, Mingus and so many others. This is a set of musical memories of previous music that may or may not have been played. I’m trying to play the memory of a cover of a recording of an improv session. This is not quiet, mellow background piano - go ahead and turn it all the way up to 11 and enjoy the ugly imperfections. That’s how I have always tried to live my life. Why change now? A huge thanks to Martin Buff and his amazing piano studio in Seattle, WA. All tracks were recorded live and nonce. Peace, -TYA
