ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"A chaotic assault of sounds and segues...Buckle up before proceeding." - Lee Zimmerman, Amplifier Magazine

“This is brilliant traditional pop with rock bits. Big, gorgeous, sharp; fussed over, yet somehow raw. And utterly unique.”– Phil Rockrohr, Time Out Chicago

"gloriously audacious." - Monica Kendrick, Chicago Reader

"Up Late With People" (2004)
From the opening sugar rush of “Where The People Kick It” to the effervescent thrills of “Adelaide,” "Up Late With People" is a mutating mélange of prog-infused pop songs that incorporate the British invasion flair of The Kinks and The Zombies with the ambitious arrangement fetishes of Queen and Pink Floyd, all with an infectious jolt of power pop a la Cheap Trick and The Sweet. The album is unapologetic as it effortlessly travels all over the musical map, all the while keeping its identity decidedly intact. From delicate harmonies to clamoring cacophony, from bludgeoning rhythms to caressing melodies, "Up Late With People" is a C.S. Lewis–like journey through your dusty old record collection. Ness’s multifarious racket is most notably exemplified by the album’s 13-minute title track. The album was recorded by Andy Gerber (Kevin Tihista, Local H) and Neal Ostrovsky (The Webb Brothers, Bon Mots). This audacious debut, which their guiding hands helped birth, can now be heard as an eclectic harbinger of the band’s second release, "You Can’t Afford To Feel."

Band members:
Rick Ness, John San Juan, Bill Swartz, Phil Young.

AOR that isn't MOR
I admit it: I'm selfish and lazy. I generally don't volunteer my time and effort for no good reason. So why the heck am I wasting my precious nap time writing a review for this album? Because sometimes in life there are injustices that must be rectified. In this case the injustice is CDBaby allowing a paltry maximum of 5 stars to rate an album. ONLY 5 STARS! The album cover alone is worth that. Okay, maybe not. In fact the cover is worth at most 2 stars. But don't listen to the cover. Listen to the CD. It is astoundingly great! Great tunes, great musicianship, great production, GREAT PUMPKIN CHARLIE BROWN! And if you're fast, you can even get it for $5 (as of this review's date 5/31/04). That's one dollar per star!! Parts of ULWP remind me of the first two stellar albums from Klaatu, a band that was decades ahead of its time in the '70s. Like then and like now, the album is stuck in my stereo. It keeps going and going and going...

No one should be without
Each song on this album is painstakingly handcrafted and meticulously put in its proper place on the cd. The cd opens with a flourish of rock genius and proceeds to take you on an extravagant journey touching every aural high and low. Up Late With People should be owned by everyone who loves music, and anyone who makes a conscious desicion not to buy this album should be looked at with disdain. Yes, it's THAT good.

Pink Floyd has a baby and names it 'Get Up Kid
Pure power pop at it's best! The cd is eclectic, unifying, and every other contradiction in an album that just makes the next song better. Tracks 3 and 4 would seem like two different bands (including that 4 is sung by a girl), but they still resonat with the same genius that you know comes from the writers. A great effort, let's have some more!

Order now. You won't be disappointed. Great band!
Ness mixes the best of progressive rock with the best of alternative guitar rock stylings and throws in a dedication to pop sensabilities that take the listener on a roller coaster ride through time. Up Late With People is only a glimpse, I'm sure, of how good this band can be and I look forward to hearing more of this great Chicago band. This is for fans of music, not just one particular style. Just hearing Adelaide will make you hit repeat on the CD player time and time again. Highly recommended! Do yourself a favor and get this album while you can.

Great talent and variety
The CD starts off with a great song, follows with a creative blend of songs, and ends with some classic rock sounds. I enjoyed it all the way through. I only wish "toeing the severed line" had been on the disc.
