ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Utopia Early Music breathes life into historically informed performances of medieval, renaissance, and baroque music. Reviews of past concerts have praised the group for “wonderful performances that captured the character and spirit of this music.” Ed Reichel of Reichel Recommends comments, “Utopia has found a way to make early music fun.”

As the Black Death, the Hundred Years War, floods, famine and economic depression shaped life in14th century Europe, French and Italian composers sought control in a “New Art” that opened music to heights of complexity and expression never before attained. In "Love's Sanctuary" Utopia presents the mysterious, sensual, and joyful music of medieval France and Italy. Special guests Shulamit Kleinerman (vielle) and Therese Honey (Gothic harp) join singers Emily Nelson (soprano), Tona Yost (soprano), and Christopher LeCluyse (tenor) to perform works by Guillaume de Machaut, Francesco Landini, Johannes Ciconia, and their contemporaries.
