Album Notes
Frank Zappa once said: Writing about music is like dancing about architecture. This ist true especially if you are dealing with music which, if you already want to use drawer methaphors, you would find somewhere in a shoe box that is laying deep down in a drawer where you keep your dearest memories. A box that you only dig out for special occasions to feel warm in your heart, brain and trousers. The music of vandermeer is like such a shoe box full of memories of things, moments or feelings that could have happend in a similar way to you too… or should.

If you wanted to separate the musicians from the singer, which we will do only shortly for the purpose of demonstration, you realize: Both would be dealing quite well without the other. So much the better when orchestra and vocals unite smoothly as one, an ocean of entirety, a vandermeer… waving back and forth, once pop, once rock, singer-songwriter, chanson, jazz, ballad, a sigh… sometimes a bit of everything but never too much. Anybody who hears the songs, the lyrics by Harmke and Flo, will always be left with a tender feeling of „more“. You just want to listen to them a little bit more or dance along – as the case my be – simply linger where vandermeers music is played.

We are dealing with a soulful voice, smoky in the finish. A musical whiskey which however runs up your throat and out in the world. Bathed in the remarkable sound of a combo whose extensive travels through the world of music you cannot only hear but also feel. The dose makes the toxin but there is nothing poisonous in the overall picture of vandermeer – it is bitter-sweet. melancolic without sadness and cheery without remorse.

Analogies with other bands are futile as well as the listing of their musical roots – unless you refer to hand and heart. Any other comparison is insignificant, is even leading astray because vandermeer stands for itself, pristine and unfiltered. Listen for yourself!
