Album Notes
“Vellamo is a tight unit comfortable in its skin, and the sound and freshness of the recording is akin to studio jazz. Therein is its appeal: Yes the vocal is ethereal, but not always, and the guitar is virtuosic, if on the verge of retro, but there isn’t a single dull moment on Koskenkylä, an album which should be played loud in the garden on a summer’s afternoon” Tom Mooney, The Echo

"The band is steady, the guitar clever and rocking, and the lead female vocals are spritely and cute. So although this is a sharp modern pop record, there are strong sounds in here as well. The key is the smart moves that the band regularly employs to bring out the melody and enhance the drama through the varied volumes and tones. The vocals pull back into a quieter drama at times and grab you no matter what the style. This is just a very good record." David Hintz, FolkWorld

"Their third album Koskenkylä has become even more of a folk rock album than their previous album, which has Californian folk-rock sound, but also the pop sound of Cindy Lauper. Catchy songs, beautiful arrangements, fine singing, and the Finns all together make a folk rock album that could count internationally. Moreover, the album grows as you listen to it because the arrangements are beautifully put together. This record does not get boring quickly." Holly Moors, Moors Magazine

Vellamo is the performing and songwriting team of Pia Leinonen and Joni Tiala. Their music is characterized by haunting melodies, Pia's ethereal lead vocals and Joni's virtuosic guitar stylings. In Finnish mythology, Vellamo is the goddess of the sea. Based in Kokkola, on the western coast of Finland, Vellamo combines the rich tradition of Finnish folksong with an appealing “retro” sensibility, creating a modern folk music experience. In addition to shows in their homeland, Vellamo spends half of each year touring abroad; their adventures have led them throughout the United States, Europe and New Zealand. Vellamo released their first album recorded in Vermont, US in early 2013. The second album Trad came out in June 2014 and was recorded with a full band featuring bass player Janne Ylikorpi and Timo Tikkamäki who are part of Vellamo’s band assembly.

Koskenkylä is Vellamo’s third album. It was recorded in the summer of 2015 at Studio Farmhouse in Kokkola and mastered by Studio 57. The cover art is made by Maria Raasakka – a print maker and visual artist from Oulu, Finland. The album is named after songwriter Leinonen’s home village and features all original material that does justice to the band’s characteristic modern folk sound, honed with the previous album Trad’s fresh folk rock compositions. The album is versatile moving from Tule kanssani sisar – songs political flame to Colours of the Meadow’s Cindy Lauper style pop and Hey Little Birds 60–70’s California folk to Palmikko’s Finnish folk ballad style. Songwriter Leinonen’s strong lyrics and unpredictable but catchy melodies tie the album together.

The opening track “Tule kanssani sisar” (Come With Me Sister) is calling for a revolution – leaning strongly to the political labor song tradition. “Colours of the Meadow” shines in all the colors of the rainbow with its bubbly 80-s pop feel. Title track “Koskenkylä” (Whitewater Village) is a description of youth lived in a northern village by a river in 1990’s Finland. The seductive rhythm in “Ladies of the Village” whispers the silent wisdom of the old women in the spirit of Fairport Convention. Dressed up in a form of a Finnish folk ballad “Palmikko” (Braid) tells a story of loss and not being able to process the sorrow that comes with it. “Sinä ajat” (You Drive) is a travel description set in a nightly roadside setting and a story of letting go. Things left undone are being bitterly regretted in the touching “Elämä on hauras” (Life is Fragile). Epic and heavy “Letters to Sweet Zoey Li” describes the late 1800’s Arrowtown and the rough environment and desperation within the community of Chinese mineworkers. “Let’s Have a Ball Tonight” has a strong Irish twist and is an old school drinking song and appraisal for having fun. The acoustic guitars of “Hey Little Bird” weave the album to a hypnotic end bringing Joni Mitchell and CSN&Y in mind.
