Album Notes

Introducing...THE VERY GIRLS: Aggie de Kruijf & Ankie Keultjes, (ok, let's just get to know them by Aggie & Ankie). The Houston, Texas-based VERY GIRLS are a vocal duo who originally made their home in Eindhoven, Holland (that's in the southern part of The Netherlands) before coming to the USA. Their music is a little bit Americana, a little bit "Euro-Folk," according to VERY GIRL, Ankie Keultjes, and oh yes, even a little bit'll have to decide for yourself.

You might say their sound is Emmylou Harris meets The Roches, or perhaps Nanci Griffith meets The Andrews Sisters. Think very accessible, engaging, infectiously- melodic songs (thanks to bandmate & mentor, Ad van Meurs, also known to many as the driving force behind THE WATCHMAN), with stunning vocal harmonies (these ladies sing in English, in case you were wondering), backed by a tight, road-tested band of acoustic musician-warriors (guitar, dobro, bass, drums, mandolin...even harp).

All but one track on Elsewhere Bound were recorded in the Netherlands, and produced & engineered by VERY GIRL, Ankie Keultjes. The bonus track, "A Letter To Your Wedding," was captured live at Houston's Anderson Fair, and was produced by Earl Willis (best known for the quintessential live album by the late Townes van Zandt).

Elsewhere Bound is an album about the seduction of American culture & American's a rather romantic vision of our country as seen through the eyes of two Dutch girls...THE VERY GIRLS (Aggie & Ankie). This CD has been receiving praise on both sides of the Atlantic & we feel that if you loved the soundtrack to Oh Brother, Where Art Thou, you will love Elsewhere Bound by THE VERY GIRLS.

Harmony, Musicianship & Romance
While most all-woman Americana/alt. folk groups like The Be Good Tanyas & Po' Girl stress the “alt” in their music, The Very Girls emphasize the folk side with soft, beautiful, acoustic melodies. Instead of striking a revolutionary pose like so many folk artists do, the Dutch duo, Aggie and Ankie focus on harmony, musicianship, and romance.

Darrell Harkins, Roots Music Report

I Recommend This One
Seeing the picture on the CD cover, you might think it was Kansas, Dorothy, but it isn't. It's the Netherlands, where American style country and folk music are appreciated by a growing number of fans and music people. It's interesting that music seems to recognize no borders or boundaries as an international language. Of course language is not a barrier anyway for The Very Girls, because they sing their wonderful harmonies in English with no discernable accent, less than one would hear in say, Minnesota, or New Braunfels, Texas. And what sweet harmonies they are, expressive of love and longing in a universal way. The Very Girls are Aggie and Ankie, and the songs were written by Ad van Meurs [The Watchman]. There are a variety of moods, some sad and wistful, some up and smiling, but they are all good songs performed skillfully with feeling. The multi-talented Ankie produced and engineered all the cuts but one, a recording in performance at Anderson Fair, Houston's oldest and best acoustic listening room, and one of my favorite hangouts when I'm in that area. I recommend this one, in fact I think I've got a Shiner Bock in the ice box,
should go well as I put on The Very Girls and sit back and dream of cooler climes...skoal!

The Very Girls/Elsewhere Bound
The Watchman is natuurlijk niet dood, maar toch: leve The Very Girls.

A Fine Achievement
Baritone sax plays along with slide guitar to create a vision of the plains of Holland - yes, Holland - this is an Americana record from the Netherlands and lovely it is too.
Nothing about it is flat. The voices have the topography of Emmylou Harris or the Indigo Girls, and they fit together like dovetail joints in a craftman's cabinet. "The Blue Zone" has jazzy inflections with soft beatnik percussion and vaguely Mexican guitars; "Win Back Your Love" shines out with the addition of male vocals [Eugene Ruffolo] bringing a mood of resignation. The live track, "A Letter To Your Wedding," shows how good they really are [The Very Girls] with a mandolin chattering away underscoring their straightforward delivery - a fine achievement.

Review of Elsewhere Bound
In today’s pop-dominated world of shallow lyrics and 1-4-5 canned rhythms, one word describes the Very Girls’ debut album from Holland: integrity. From the rich melodic baritone sax solo played by Menno Romers on Track 1 (“Clayton”) which melts into the Very Girls, Aggie’s and Ankie’s innocent heartfelt vocal interpretations of Ad Van Meurs’ (a/k/a The Watchman) original songs, we are struck by the integrity of the songs as a whole, the direction they flow, and the story they tell. Especially standing out on Elsewhere Bound, is “Dancing on the World,” “My Own Way,” “Hollow World,” and “Win Back Your Love.”
Listening to this finely crafted record, aptly engineered and produced by Ankie Keultjes, is like sleeping lazily in the morning and hearing a breeze blow the wind chimes, drifting in and out of consciousness, with a tremendous feeling of well being. Some music calls this way, and I urge everyone to order a copy, lay back, and enjoy the experience.
Underneath the Very Girls’ two voices lies the superb Amsterdam bass player, Theo Wijdeven, supported by the unusual drumming on some of the songs of Eric Vanderlest, a premiere Dutch drummer whose style is reminiscent of the rhythms Paul Simon has recently brought to the public forefront in his African recordings. Also outstanding is The Watchman’s multi-talented touch on slide guitar, piano, synthesizer and dobro. Also a joy is the return of Jeroen Jongsma from previous Ad Van Meurs’ records, and his magnificent mandolin playing on “Hollow World” and “A Letter to Your Wedding,” the latter recorded live at Anderson Fair in Houston, Texas. Gene Williams, an Oklahoman lead guitar player, who has previously played with fellow Oklahoman, Jimmy LaFave, also stands out on lead guitar on this CD.
Out of the head and heart of Ad Van Meurs comes this fine collection of original acoustic music and you turn this record off (if you can) knowing he is truly “in the energy,” with the Very Girls “dancing on the world” with him.

Dutch invasion of Texas a hit north of the border!
Every once in a while, I come across a CD that makes me feel like old friends have dropped in for a visit. From the very first track on "Elsewhere Bound" I knew I had found some new old friends. Tight harmonies, excellent musicianship and good writing all combine to make this Recovery Records release a winner. Already on the Acoustic Planet playlist and likely to stay there for a while. I say keep it comin' girls -- your Canadian cousins are looking forward to another helping of Dutch Americana.

Danielle Dreilinger, Sing Out!

This Album is Mellow and Pretty
U.S. Americana bands find fans in the Netherlands; apparently, Dutch folk acts find them in Texas. The Very Girls have flutey voices and harmonies somewhere between the Nields and Peter, Paul and Mary. Songwriter Ad van Meurs [the Watchman] and his tasteful band dip into Americana and Spanish jazz. "Elsewhere Bound" by the Very Girls doesn't break new ground, but this album is mellow and pretty.

The Very Girls Have A Truly Lovely Sound
Many moons ago, Ankie Keultjes, The Watchman's sound engineer, gave me a cassette of a fun side project she was involved in with two other Dutch women, which could be described as a country-rock girl group. Since then, the trio has shrunk to a duo, Keultjes and Aggie de Kruijf (I know, that's easy for me to say) and the project has obviously got a lot more serious. So too has the music, which is now American folk style, plus something Houston-based Recovery Recordings calls "Euro-Swing", which is a new one on me, guess it came after my time. If you've ever been to Holland, you'll be aware that the entire population speaks better English than you or me, and the 12 songs, all written by Ad van Meurs, aka The Watchman, are in English. Van Meurs is very prominent on the album, playing guitar, slide guitar, piano, synthesizer and dobro, also singing harmony on one track, and what with drums, bass, sax, another guitarist (former Jimmy LaFave sideman Gene Williams) and various other guests including Thad Beckman, there are times when the playing tends to get in the way of the music. At any rate, "A Letter To Your Wedding" [the bonus track], recorded live at Houston's Anderson Fair, makes the rest of the album, cut in an Eindhoven studio, sound a bit busy. Still, Van Meurs is a noteable and intricate songwriter, and the two women [The Very Girls] have a truly lovely sound.

This Is A CD Worth Seeking Out
Folk and Americana are considered by many to be the voice of America. So what do you do when faced with an artist that plays this style better than almost anyone else and isn't from America? You just sit and enjoy, that's what! The Very Girls, Aggie de Kruijf and Ankie Keultjes (Whew! That was a mouthful!), hail from The Netherlands and play Americana better than most. Perhaps it's the fact that they are seeing a romanticized America from a distance. Whatever the case may be, this album is wonderful. "Elsewhere Bound" is a collection of songs written by The Watchman, Ad van Meurs. As a matter of fact, he wrote eleven of the twelve tracks on this album. Although the sound touches in folk, swing, country, and a downhome sort of classical, like the CD's intro and outro, it seems to rest on a quiet plane where Aggie and Ankie's soothing voices reside. It's impossible not to like this CD really. From the soothing "Clayton" intro to the James Taylor-ish "Win Back Your Love" that brings an end to the studio songs on "Elsewhere Bound" you just feel a certain connection to the heart of these songs. It's almost like you are at Fire Hall on a Friday night and a couple of local girls that everyone loves are playing their folk songs while the town mingles until all hours of the morning. This is a CD worth seeking out.
