Album Notes
On behalf of the Vespucci Quartet “Time for a new cd!”
After releasing our first cd ‘Debut’ in 2014, the urge to make a follow-up cd was soon to arise. Our 10-year anniversary provided the perfect opportunity for us to realize this wish.
Not only do we feel like we have grown a lot in the meantime, but the wonderful violinist Ruña ‘t Hart has also joined the quartet; yet another reason to capture this marvelous new formation.
The reactions to our debut cd were really good, and what we especially enjoyed was that many people really like to play it at home. That it is nice music to listen to. That is essentially what is most important to us as a quartet: to keep sharing our music with the public, and not just to have it like a trophy on the shelf.
For this new cd we therefore again chose for enjoyable repertoire, though with a challenging twist for both players and public.
About the repertoire of this cd:
The ‘Quinten’ quartet by Haydn is a piece that we have performed multiple times. A technically challenging work especially for the first violinist, and absolutely one of the best pieces from Haydn’s literature. The key and the dramatic first movement are unquestionably unparalleled, especially for that time.
The third string quartet by Brahms is definitely not his best-known work, and probably requires a thorough listen before one can truly enjoy it. But after that, it is so breathtakingly beautiful! Brahms at his best, despite its musical and technical complexity.
The ‘Langsamer Satz’ by Webern is passionate and intense. A few months before recording, we learnt the piece by heart and performed it like that a couple of times. This was a first for the quartet, and therefore very exciting and challenging. At the same time also a great way to really get to know our brand-new second violinist Ruña.
The recording sessions took place at the Zeeuwse Concertzaal in Middelburg during the ‘super-heatwave’ of July 2019, a period we are not soon to forget. Thank- fully, the hall remained somewhat cool until the end of the sessions. It was an ambitious program to record in only three days’ time, but we gave it our everything until the very last take. After a long day of recording we took a well-deserved dive in the sea or enjoy Middelburg’s charming center from a terrace.
While recording in Middelburg, our producer Ientje’s parents were so kind to offer us a place to stay. A wonderful place right around the corner of the hall and the center of town. They even supplied us with bikes for the entire quartet, what great service!
All in all, recording this cd was an intense, special, and beautiful experience, and we hope you will be able to hear all that love and enjoyment in the recording.
Finally, we would like to thank Ientje and Joost for
their trust and the amazing recording, Ientje’s parents with whom we got to stay, the Zeeuwse Concertzaal for borrowing and using their marvelous hall, and of course each other for the beautiful playing. Playing string quartet really does remain incredible.
We hope to see you at one of our concerts!
All best and enjoy,
The Vespucci Quartet
