Album Notes
Presented here is a collection of recent works. My String Quartet #2 is sub-titled “Six Short Poems”, reflecting the brief, somewhat descriptive nature of the individual movements. This piece was composed almost entirely over a single long weekend, which I think is reflected in its direct communicativeness and immediacy of impact.

Next we have two movements from the suite “Trees, Falling in Forests (Making Sounds)” which was written for - and here features - my friend Keith Gurland. The first movement, the Introduction, is given a full (virtual) orchestra treatment, exceeding its original chamber scoring. As for the Scherzo, we wanted to be able to present a more definitive version than the live recording of the premiere provided. Presenting Keith’s brilliance on saxophone and clarinet was my primary motivation in composing the piece, and I’m thrilled to be able to include these 2 movements with this current collection.

The 3 Movements for Guitar and Chamber Ensemble (vln, vla, db, ob, cl, bsn) were written a while ago, but only recently orchestrated. These pieces are humbly dedicated with gratitude, respect, admiration and love to Gene Bertoncini. Thank you for all you have done for me, I am proud to be called your amico!

The Prelude and Fugue were also composed at the behest of Keith Gurland. Originally imagined for a saxophone quartet, these pieces are here presented (with only minor modifications other than obviously scoring) for Brass Choir and sort of Nancarrow-like midi-player-piano. The kludgy quantized swing adds to the light heartedness of this jazz fugue.
