Three-Fifths (feat. Keith Gurland & George Coleman, Jr.)

by Victor Magnani, Marty Rizek & Mark Banfitch

A group of compositions by Victor Magnani (guitar), with Marty Rizek (bass) and Mark Banfitch (drums). Continuing the jazz-rock-funk-fusion-latin-free genre blending that can be heard on recordings from their other groups Slowburn and The Rivington Project. Keith Gurland joins on sax for a number of cuts, and George Coleman, Jr. is heard on drums on a couple.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Victor Magnani (guitar), Marty Rizek (bass) and Mark Banfitch (drums) were 3/5ths of the band Slowburn (or 3/6ths or 3/7ths, depending on the day), and the present recording is very much a continuation of the work they did with that group. Combining elements of jazz, rock and latin into a unique mixture, they present the listener with strong yet catchy compositions balanced by fiery improvisation.

Keith Gurland - a truly original voice, in every respect - is heard on sax on a number of cuts, making invaluable contributions. George Coleman, Jr. - of the Coleman jazz dynasty (George Sr. and Gloria) and The Rivington Project (also with Victor and Marty) plays the drums on “Intro…” and “Dude…” only.

Many of these performances were first takes. Of special note is “Moby Mark”. Written specifically for the recording session, this was the first time that Mark was getting to record his full kit. The performance you hear was done in one take – no percussion or drum overdubs of any kind (there are some extra, overdubbed guitars on there). That’s all one guy on a set of drums – no percussionist, no looping, everything you hear was played live. Also check out how natural Mark’s 5/4 soloing is over the end of “It’s Not Liken to Happy”.

So open up your favorite fifth, and take a ride that’s funky, driving, sometimes tender and always exciting!
