Nostalgia is an album of Balkan music, released in 2012. It consists of 14 tracks, mainly Greek Bouzouki, Baglamas & Acoustic Guitar instrumentals. There are also a few songs, in Greek, Macedonian and Serbian languages.
The overall mood of the album is soft, laid back, easy listening Mediterranean.

...and the primary question first: did I like it?

Well....Knowing Victor personally for quite some time now, dependant on him for few small favours, I would have to carefully tread for a straight answer and scratch my head profusely. And I think he spitefully knew I would, but anyway, that’s what friends are for in the Balkans, innit mate?...

Soooo... it is not about his undisputed virtuosity at string instruments like guitar or his beloved, omnipresent bouzouki. It is not about honesty and heart with which he brags and performs his obviously Greek heritage, imbued by every tone of it, steeped in rebetiko, tradition of respect for the classical folklore...His soul is there, open and wide for everyone to feel and see...just like the sea...
I guess it is, finally, about tastes, and someone wisely said long time ago (but wasn’t Greek, the bastard!) “De gustibus non est disputandum”. Meaning...well, you figure it out...See where I am going, right?...namely, that I wouldn’t mind, not a tiniest bit, if I listened to most of these tracks somewhere south... like an island drenched in the sun, silent sea waves breaking the near shore, providing the necessary background, sat down on a simple wooden chair and table covered with chequered cloth, sipping ouzo, cloudy from the ice cubes in the glass, and a large dish with original (not Danish) feta cheese beside it...Or a leafy beach tavern under the full moon, giro or souflaki waiting to be savoured...with retsina, of course...You get the picture?

Now, I imagine Victor would, probably suspiciously, glance quickly at me, try to convince me or even reprimand me out of hand, maybe more than adequately citing a grand meister of music, known once as Wolfie from Peter Schaffer’s and Milos Forman’s “Amadeus”: “It goes with the harmony” (...stupid!). And so it does...
That is exactly why, playing the CD, I somewhat lacked the surroundings, the scenery, the air, the mentioned harmony, to enjoy it really completely. Who knows, maybe I am not a very imaginative person. Listening this music on a damp, windy, typically English summer afternoon may justify the title, but somehow did not fit, it failed to bring me the musical adventure, to make me escape out of the proscribed narrow scope, to render wider appeal than of a Greek gathering, whatever it means... Selfishly, I was expecting, hoping, cringing, for a more “fusion” approach. The Balkans is so wide and diverse, in any way, musically utmost. Victor knows it, (I know he does) much better than me...that is what he works on constantly...He can plunder easily anything he wants and put it together in a nice, exciting package...tastefully...when he wants it!

Alas...tastes, choices...don’t get me wrong, I am positively sure many will like his approach much more than me, but for myself, there is time and place for this kind of inspiration, folklore... My taste buds say track No.2 “Guitar Meditation” was something to evoke in me certain ethno-jazz cross-flairs I craved, maybe the sung tracks at No. 12 & 13 or the last waltz, they seem to have offered something different...they revive, at least in me, the possibilities of Balkan music world’s unlimited vastness...

It was done before, of course, for other ethno styles, successfully and with more-less ubiquitous acclaim. And maybe it isn’t any new and fresh direction to follow. Being what you really are, true to yourself, what your heart tells you, how your soul guides your playing hands, means integrity and identity, style and panache...And yet...tastes of the audience, tastes of the critics...

You realised by now, definitely, that I am no musician, although I was asked, as an unqualified listener, to write this impression. I would not call it a review, sounds very pompous and professionally cold, executed journalistically, knowingly, with a trace of hidden menace and pride... But me and Viki are friends and neighbours, so I was gently persuaded to come up with the goods...or bads of it...But he is sincere with his music, so should I, about his music. And that is how it should be, at the end of a rainy English summer. What a conflicting task...

Believe it or not, still scratching my head...or maybe it is that damn shampoo I bought the other day, should have gotten the more expensive one...hell, who knows...tastes, choices...anyway, who came up with that f****** smart proverb, some bloody illiterate Roman who had a Greek slave for a scribe?...aaahhhh, leave it! Endaxi!

Closed my eyes, trying to imagine whatever... sun, sand, waves, anything nice... so... play it again, Sa...Victor!
