ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
VINNIE CUTRO &
NEW YORK CITY SOUNDSCAPE
(with guest artist MIKE STERN)

New York City Soundscape is an ensemble led by trumpeter Vinnie Cutro
that features noted jazz musicians located in the New York area. The concept
in forming this group is to record original material contributed by musicians
from the New York scene and also re- introduce jazz standards that are now presented in a modern ,fresh format.

This particular CD release of New York City Soundscape features the artistry of
celebrated musicians such as Mike Stern,Victor Jones,Bob Ferrel,Mitch Schechter,Martin Wind, and Sarah Jane Cion.

The title song of the CD (Aberration : a departure from the normal or typical) suggests this concept of focusing on new images ,new directions and sounds.Cutro intends on recording future cd projects incorporating the many different elements of todays music including a variety of musicians and multicultural sounds .

There is much to say about this album, but for those who are newcomers to this music or to this artist,a little background is in order.Vinnie Cutro ,born in New Jersey in 1953,received his formal musical training throughout the years and continued his education at New Jersey University where he received his B.A in music education. Then his working education began as a freelance musician in the New York area.Throughout the years he had the opportunity to work beside musicians such as Machito,Jimmy Mc Griff,Mel Torme,Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton,Horace Silver, Blood Sweat & Tears, Ray Charles,Mel Lewis Orchestra and the Spirit of Life Ensemble. He has traveled extensively throughout the world appearing at jazz festivals and concerts in Europe,Japan, South America,Africa,Canada and the U.S.A.

The festival appearances include locations such as the North Sea Festival(Holland),Capital Jazz Festival (England),Weisen Jazz Festival (Austria),
La Grande Parade du Jazz(France),Perugia Jazz Festival (Italy),Skepsholmen Festival (Sweden),Lugano Jazz Festival.(Switzerland)Cascais (Portugal),Tabarka Jazz Festival(Tuniesia), Playboy Jazz Festival (U.S.A.),Kool Jazz Festival (U.S.A.),Newport Jazz Festival (U.S.A.)and the Chicago Jazz Festival (U.S.A.).

As a member of the Lionel Hampton Quartet,he performed guest appearances with various symphonic orchestras in the U.S.A. such as the Columbus Symphony Orchestra,Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Omaha Symphony.

His first CD release as a leader(Blues for the Optimist;West Side Records 1995) featured jazz artists such as Bob Mintzer,Jim McNeely,Victor Jones, and Mike Richmond. This CD contains 7 original compositions by the leader plus two new arrangements of John Coltrane's Giant Steps and Naima.

He later continued his education at New York University where he received his Masters in Jazz Performance. There he furthered his studies in jazz composition, classical studies, jazz arranging and counterpoint with Dr. Tom Boras and Jim McNeely.

Crictics :
Philip Elwood, critic for THE SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER called Cutro's playing
"...hot,cool,sweet and tart.He follows in the footsteps of some of the greatest modern jazz trumpeters."

Peter Vasher, writing in Great Britain's JAZZ EXPRESS called Cutro's
"Lionel Hampton's most memorable soloist."

Owen Cordle of JAZZ TIMES wrote "The name Vinnie Cutro must have slipped through the cracks. How could we have missed this fiery trumpet and fluglehorn player who has performed with Horace Silver and Lionel Hampton ? His forte is hard bop,his chops fashioned after Freedie Hubbard and Lee Morgan and his arrangements reminiscent of Silver."

LINEAR NOTES
Beyond all Limits
"Throughout our exploration of jazz history,we encounter the many different styles of improvisation that have been developed and nurtured by visionaries such as Woody Shaw.Beyond all Limits is a musical selection
that exemplifies the artistry and innovative style of the late great trumpeter .
The use of intervalic motion within the melody along with the accompaning
rich harmonic texture truly showcases the talent and insight of this great musician. This selection of this song acknowledges the presence and impact
of Shaw's legacy on Cutro's continueing improvisational journey and
quest...
Roy Nicolosi ( Jazz Critic )

Aberration
" The title song of the CD (Aberration : a departure from the normal or typical) suggests this concept of focusing on new images ,new directions and sounds.

The use of space and selected riffs in the introduction creates an atmosphere of erratic uncertainty and irregularity thus creating a surreal
musical painting of mystical oddity. The majestic entrance of the trumpet
theme, suggesting a searching quest for direction and focus, eventually
polarizes the musical elements shifting the state of mind to that of resolution
and arrival "
Vinnie Cutro

On The Road
"On the Road was part of a commission I received in 1995 to write a musical based on the life of writer Jack Kerouac. The title is probably one of Kerouac's most well known works. We used this piece in the play to denote the passing of time when Jack is riding in the taxi, driven by Dr. Sax,his character from a book of the same title, from Florida to his hometown of Lowell,
Massachussets. With Dr. Sax and others as his guide,Jack is asked to look back and reflect important moments in his life and to understand their lessons. He faces his past demons on the road to his own death when he reaches his destination."
Tom Boras

In a Sentimental Mood
In celebrating the 100 anniversary of Duke Ellington, the ensemble pays tribute to a legendary figure in the world of jazz .Mitch Schechter's version of a 1930's tune " In A Sentimental Mood " showcases the virtuosity and talents of this young pianist.

" Presenting the inherent beauty and emotional quality of a great standard such as Duke Ellinton's "In a Sentimental Mood" in the process of reharmonisation can be quite challenging... First of all, such a well written tune needs no " harmonic doctoring ".The changes need no changing....Especially challenging was the professors (young Vincent's) request to change the harmony of the first downbeat which is D minor to A7 flat 5. This created a dramatic shift in the harmonic tension of the tune. The goal then was to set the tune in a new dramatic light that would showcase Cutro's unbridled creativity, while at the same time allowing the inherent beauty and emotional quality of the tune to
come through without loosing it's identity.
Hope you enjoy the arrangement "
Mitch Schechter

Inside Out
" Cutro's "Inside Out " a up tempo blues whose twisting and weaving intervalic melody immediatly captures the attention of the listener, blends a complex line between guitar and trumpet with a momentum of swing. It is a striking composition that affords each player space for his single flourishes and artistry "
Roy Nicolosi ( Jazz Critic )

Inseption
" Inseption , a tune composed back in 1991, signifies the advent of personal change in reference to musical concepts and direction of musical composition. This selection was inspired by the musical influence of Herbie Hancock and his legendary composition " Maiden Voyage ". The medium
tempo tune ,which incorporates a straight eighth feel , allows Stern to reveal
his artisic talents by exposing his sensative and colorful approach to the composition. "
Vinnie Cutro

Real Deal
" As you listen to " Real Deal " it is apparent that the influence of Miles Davis later years and The Brecker Brothers distinctive style of writing have surfaced in Cutro's original funk composition .The introductory statement, a intervalic horn line weaving and bobbing throughout , resolves into a jazz-funk-hip hop groove that lends it self to creative solos.Cutro's distinctive approach to this song reflects the conseptual use of space and sound colors. . Bob Ferrel's fiery trombone solo surely allows the listener an opportunity to experience a triple threat of chops, sound and ideas. Mike Stern's virtuostic skills of melodic approach ,technique, and steller guitar sound colors all together contribute to this inspiring solo "
Roy Nicolosi

Mood's Mood for Love
"Moody's Mood for Love, a song based on "I'm In The Mood For Love",
is a legendary jazz standard that has been recorded in many different
formats throughout the years. The idea of recording this beautifully
constructed melody on trumpet presented an opportunity for Cutro to
exhibit his lyrical ,melodic and virtuostic skills on this musical selection.
Here is a track that also allows Martin Wind (bass) to express his artistic and
mature style of improvisation "
Roy Nicolosi ( Jazz Critic )

May I be Frank
" May I be Frank was composed for the great arranger/composer and tenor saxaphonist,Frank Foster. I was in the middle of scoring this song for a large
jazz ensemble that would feature Frank as soloist when I played a sketch of it for Vinnie. I knew that he would understand the concept of the tune because of Vinnie's technical virtuosity and his great gifts as a jazz soloist with the attraction for model contexts "
Tom Boras

" Cutro brings his significant experience, his influences, and his individuality to the presentation of these tunes .The combination of original compositions and jazz standards plays tribute to the composers of today and yesterday.

He would like his music to reflect the totality of what Miles Davis ,John Coltrane,Duke Ellington,James Moody,Horice Silver and others have inspired with "
Roy Nicolosi ( Jazz Critic )

A Great CD from my favorite Trumpet Player!
This is Vinny's best date so far! A great and varied collection of some hip originals with some burning solos! On the featured standards I particularly liked Vinny's mellow solo on Sentimental Mood! The side men here are excellent, too. Mitch Schecter and Bob Ferrell are some smokin' dudes who I have worked with and sound great here, too! When's Vinny's next CD coming?
