Album Notes
RadioIndy says this about Pete Vogel's latest project:

"'Tightrope' is an impressive CD that features the adult rock and modern folk music of Pete Vogel and a cast of some of Columbus, Ohio’s most talented musicians. The music on the CD is layered with many instruments that nicely back the strong vocals and memorable songwriting. All of the tracks that we heard were solid, with many catchy upbeat tunes, nicely mixed with some softer, more acoustic tracks. The impressive musicianship on the CD is a testament to the strong local music scene in Columbus. “Hollywood, USA” has an excellent up-beat groove with screeching sax fills, and reminds us of Stevie Wonder. “On the Gable” is a beautiful, soft song with tasteful piano and acoustic guitar work that highlight an emotional vocal performance. “Are You Alive?” has an inspirational message that is effectively delivered by the soft, deep lead vocals and soulful backing female vocals. If you enjoy adult rock artists such as the Counting Crows or Peter Himmelman, you will enjoy this CD. Pick up a copy today!"

"Tightrope" is the culmination of 3 years of work: one year of writing, one year of recording and one year of post production. Pete Vogel, a veteran performer from Columbus, OH decided to work from home on this project. Using Digital Performer software, a Mackie 8-channel mixing board and Samson microphones, Vogel wrote, produced, engineered and mixed this CD from home.

"I wanted to write a CD that was both catchy and musical, and involved all the great musicians I've worked with over the past ten years." Vogel has worked with nearly a dozen bands since 1997, so he wasn't short on performers to help make his dream come alive. He hired the efforts of 27 musicians and singers for "Tightrope"; some are local music icons, others are session players from other parts of the country.

"Making this project was surely a dream come true," Vogel said. "When you work with bands for years and years, there comes a time when you want to try your hand at the whole project: writing, recording, engineering and mixing. 'Tightrope' gave me the opportunity to do that."

It was a mammoth project: 15 songs, 43 different instruments, 3 lead singers, 3 backup singers, 7 different guitarists, 6 different bassists, over 300 tracks and 57 minutes of music. Vogel wrote 10 of the songs on his own and collaborated with fellow artists John Bolzenius and Mark Cantwil on the other 5 songs.

"The best part about this CD was the input from the other musicians. I simply allowed them to play what they felt, then took their best parts for the finished product. In all, the relationship with the musicians was both democratic and autocratic."

Tom Boyer (Oswald and the Herringbones, The Johnson Brothers) was hired as assistant producer and post-production specialist. "Tom's the best in the biz," said Vogel, "whatever style you want to work with, Tom will make your project that much better." Tom also filled in on double duty: he sang on two tracks and played various instruments on two more.

"Columbus, OH has a ton of talent," Vogel said. "This CD is a testament to that."

Some of the musicians who performed on the CD include Mark Cantwil (Jameson Rain, Brotherton); John Bolzenius (So Everything, Throat Culture); Andy Harrison (Howlin' Maggie, X-Rated Cowboys); Kay Harris (Sirens, Zero One); Joe Crump (Hoodoo Soul Band, Johnson Brothers); Kevin Deffet (Ragweed, The Balance); Yiling Tien (Songbird, Leah Gordone); Colin Murphy (Uses for Wood, Beggar's Bridge); Mark Deffet (The Flashbacks, Yogi Poets); Bob Mains (Blue Vinyl, JB Bruck) and many more.

"I'm very proud of this recording. It's my best work ever. It was truly magical working with some of the best musicians Columbus has to offer."
