Album Notes
Voltaire, known for his tongue-in-cheek Gothic folk music, had spent his adult life saying he disliked Country music. That is, until one day when in a karaoke bar he was reacquainted with a Johnny Cash song called Folsom Prison Blues. "I LOVE that song," exclaimed Voltaire. It was followed by a Hank Williams song, a Merle Haggard song, songs by Kenny Rogers, Willie Neslon, Buck Owens and more. "It was then," says Voltaire, "that I realized that I didn't hate Country music after all. I hated what it had become. In my somewhat drunken state, I thought, wouldn't it be interesting to make a record of old-school country music, the kind of record that could have been released 40 years ago?" The next day, when the rum wore off, he still thought it was a good idea and he got to work. The result is a collection of original Country songs by Voltaire that pay tribute to the the original spirit of country. Humorous, occasionally dark and always truthful, these songs hail back to a time when country was about storytelling and getting to the truth of things. In that light, Voltaire fans will realize that this CD isn't such a departure for him after all.

I was a little worried picking this up, I am no fan of country music. It's definitely Voltaire's style, which helped me ease into it a little better. My first listen I was confused...unsure of how I felt about it, but listening to the songs randomly throughout the day, I slowly began to accept the country style and started to enjoy it immensely. Writing this review after Riding A Black Unicorn...I have to say from HLIAST to the new record...it's incredible. Voltaire is amazing. For me, it took a few lessons but someone could easily get hooked from the first song.

Hate lives in a small town
As soon as its shipped and in my grubby little hands, ill devour it and give a proper reveiw. But i thank you Voltaire.. because its true... Country has become vapid superficial banjos. Jhonny Cash is one of my favorite artists, and i always wondered why. He was a true country artist... told a story, like you, and like most folk music, which is what country is suppose to be. It was supose to be our folk music. After a certain point, it failed. In any case, love your work, and thanks for opening my mind yet again to the pleasures of this world and everything in it!!

Fun and impressive
I finally got my hands on this album and it's awesome. The lyrics are clearly standard Voltaire fare set to very well done country music. I never would have expected an album like this from Voltaire, but all I can really say is that he completely nailed it. Whether you are an old school Country & Western fan or a fan of the artist, you'll probably love this album. Very well done, in my opinion. A+

Definitely impressive
A very creative combination of country with a tinge of darkness, clever irony, great music and instruments, and Voltaire's unique voice. The humor is definitely Voltaire style and I believe the music could appeal to Voltaire fans, country fans, and people who just like something new, all the same. The style is something I've never heard before but it still has Voltaire's touch. The music is rich and the lyrics are smart. Definitely impressive and an album I highly recommend.

Country with a twist
Your music is true, and it tells amazing stories about life.

Another Awesome Albulm!
As with all of Voltaire’s releases, this albulm contains beautifully written lyrics and enchanting music so entertaining, you will (as previously noted in the reviews) wear out your CD. Voltaire, once again, has captured the true essence of music in its original styling, and puts forth each song with such eloquence, wit, amusement, and energy, you will regret not getting it sooner.

Even if country isn’t your usual choice of music, you’ll like this. I promise. I’ve avoided country music like the plaque for thirty years, with very few exceptions. I’ve listened to this albulm over and over, blissfully neck deep in country. Good music is good music, regardless of its styling, and this albulm is great!

Good Stuff
Clever, funny and good listening. Voltaire, the Robbie Fulks of goth country. More please, I loved it.
