Album Notes
VOXFIRE is the collaboration of three of the most highly regarded interpreters of early and contemporary vocal music on the U.S. West Coast, who are adapting and presenting the works of these eras with their own distinctive musical style and dramatic flair.

Working alone as well as with some of the most prominent instrumental specialists of today, they have performed music from medieval luminaries such as Hildegard, Machaut and Landini through the Italian Baroque masters, such as Monteverdi and Barbara Strozzi, to works by modern-era composers as varied as Benjamin Britten and Steve Reich.

Text in progress.

SAMELA AIRD BEASOM, soprano, began her career with the Roger Wagner Chorale as a soloist in the Renaissance and Baroque repertoire, touring extensively throughout the United States and Japan. She has since been featured with numerous other ensembles, including I Cantori, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, and the Los Angeles Music Center Opera, with whom she has performed more than eighty productions. Ms. Beasom has been featured soloist at the Carmel Bach Festival, Santa Cruz Baroque Festival, Corona del Mar Baroque Festival and Ojai Festival. Ms. Beasom is a founding member and frequent soloist with Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra. She can be heard on the CD Songs for Clarinet and Soprano by Gordon Jacobs in addition to countless motion picture soundtracks. Ms. Beasom is a founding member of Voxfire and is also active as a private voice instructor.

Mezzo-soprano, CHRISTEN HERMAN, a graduate of University of California at Berkeley, has appeared as soloist with various ensembles throughout Southern California and the West, including Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, the Paulist Boy Choristers, Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra, and I Cantori. Although she is known particularly for her work in Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque styles, she has on occasion been heard happily venturing into the Classical and even Romantic periods. Performances of contemporary music include various film soundtracks and premiere performances/recordings of new works by several living American composers including Steve Reich, Joan LaBarbara, and Daniel Lentz. Festivals and series include the Ojai Festival, the Los Angeles Bach Festival, the Armand Hammer Music Series, and the Colly Soleri Series at Arcosanti, Arizona. Recent solo performances include Long Beach Opera's production of Charpentier's The Imaginary Invalid, Steve Reich's Tehillim, the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival, and the soundtrack to the movie Simpatico. Ms. Herman is a founding member of both the soprano trio Voxfire and the new vocal quartet Vox Profundis.

Soprano SUSAN JUDY specializes in performing both early and contemporary music and has appeared as soloist at concerts and festivals throughout the United States. She has recorded both commercially and for a number of west coast composers, has premiered new music, such as west coast premieres of works by Steve Reich, John Adams and Otto Luening, and can be heard with the California EAR Unit on Sean Heim’s new CD the night-speech of plant and stone. She performs with the Los Angeles Bach Society, I Cantori and Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, where she has played principals in staged productions of both medieval and Baroque works, and recently appeared as Galatea in Händel’s Acis and Galatea with The Baroque Orchestra of Iowa. She also works with American Bach Soloists and the newly formed Artists’ Vocal Ensemble in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ms. Judy is a founding member of the soprano trio Voxfire, for which she is producing and performing concerts from ancient through commissioned new works, and with which she has produced two CDs. She is a founding member of the vocal quartet Vox Profundis.
