Album Notes
“WallyWorld” CD is a follow up to my instructional “Global Beats” DVD for drum set and percussion I recorded in 2005 for Hal Leonard Publishing. This CD is my invitation to the listener to join me on my travels around the world, as I experienced the music of various cultures, ethnicities, nationalities, musical styles, with musicians I enjoy making music with.

Roger Burn, my late dear friend and great musician, motivated and helped me write the music for the Global Beats DVD to be followed up by this CD. In 2006, we sadly lost Roger Burn to cancer shortly after starting the recording of WallyWorld with great bassists Jimmy Haslip and Alphonso Johnson at Jon Lowry studio in Los Angeles. These basic recordings sat on my hard drive for a long time.

Fast forward to New Years 2012, and the inevitable question, "What's your New Years resolution?" A loud and clear voice rang out in my head, "...finish what you started." I'm sure that was Roger, insisting that I finish the music I started with him and complete the CD.

Music is both an individual and group creative expression. With the collaboration of friend percussionists Kevin Ricard and Richie "Gajate" Garcia, I was able to lay down amazing percussion tracks at their home studios and continue recording. They encouraged me to go forward. "Palante" always!

Then came Michael Oneil. Michael recorded superb jazz funk guitar performances on the track “Funky Arequita”, a Horopo 3/4 rhythm from Venezuela with a funk groove, along with Matt Rohde on keyboards and great engineer Josh Eagan at Studio C, The Steakhouse Recording Studios. We completed the first tune.

“Abakuando,” a Afro Cuban Abakua rhythm mixed with Rock was the second tune. A "movie soundtrack" like composition. Michael Thompson, an extraordinary guitarist and composer, laid down signature tracks. This tune was longer than I had envisioned, but the playing was so amazing it was very difficult to fade it out, so I let the track play until the end. From this point, I contacted more musicians that I respected and admired to polish each tune like individual pieces of jewelry.

My friend Ricky Encarnación had many versions of some of his compositions and through many back and forth musical communications and editing from Puerto Rico where he lives, and Los Angeles, where I live, we came up with “AfroChina Vision,” and “Deja que el Alma Corra." His brilliant bass playing and musicianship shines on these tunes. On the latter composition we were able to record one of the best virtuoso conga players around today, Richard Flores. Also, you can hear the great singer from Puerto Rico Wilito Otero. When I hear these compositions, I see sonic visions like a soundtrack to a movie.

The beautiful soulful singer Katia Moraes sang and wrote the words to “Maracatu,” a Brazilian rhythm from the Northeast, Pernambuco. I soaked up these rhythms when I was in Pernambuco performing with Giovanni Hidalgo in the ‘90s. Alphonso Johnson on bass and Michael Nomad Ripoll on guitar added their unique musical touch and virtuosity. Roger's original piano part made it in this song!

The composition “Echoes of India” was a demo my friend guitarist Neale Heywood composed while we toured with Lindsey Buckingham. Neale played his demo for me and I visualized "India" immediately. The end result is the music you now hear. Neale’s playing and programming are truly spectacular. I can do yoga and meditate with this music all day!!

Then came the collaboration with maestro Joey Navarro. Joey contributed amazing keyboard work in his studio to many of these tracks. He made them light up with solos and colors.

Masterful musicians David Garfield - keyboards, Oskar Cartaya - bass, Hans Muller - keyboards, Ramon Stagnaro - guitars, all helped me with their magnificent musicianship bringing their heart and soul to this project. My dear daughter Lilliana, who came in towards the end of this CD project, contributed her unique beautiful voice. Lilliana recorded in between finishing her degree at USC and touring with George Benson on vocals and percussion. I was fortunate to have her sing some beautiful signature chants and choruses. Needless to say, I’m very proud of her.

Working from Studio C in North Hollywood, CA as my central hub, Josh Eagan, John Cranfield and I took recorded tracks done at each musician’s home studios and then brought them back to Studio C for completion. We also recorded at Studio C “Asi es la Vida” live with my great musician friends David Garfield - keys, Oskar Cartaya - bass and JP Castillo - Vocals.

In 2012, I started playing with the legendary band Chicago. This was a blessing since my tour with Lindsey Buckingham, whom I had been performing with from 2007 - 2011, had been cancelled suddenly. This delayed the CD project further. Chicago allowed me to go on tour and have the time to work on finishing the CD. I had already finished most of the basic tracks except for two, “Espiritual” and “Asi es la Vida.“

Lou Pardini, fantastic keyboard player and lead singer with Chicago brings down the house every night with amazing piano performances. I asked him if he could play on “Espiritual”. He did and the end result gives me goose bumps every time I hear this beautiful Brazilian jazz composition.

Keith Howland, Chicago’s great guitarist and sound engineer, mastered three tracks on the CD, and later, the whole CD. Listening to Keith's playing made me realize his "guitar voice" was what was missing in the Cha Cha Rock song “Asi es la Vida”, a tune I came up with while walking the streets of Paris in year 2000, going to a Cuban concert and speaking to my friend in English. Keith adds a great Blues / Rock feel to this Cha Cha Latin tune. The great poet Anabel Calatayud from Argentina collaborated with the verses.

John Cranfield took all these compositions to the next level by mixing each track, each song, spectacularly! He is one of the best mixers I have ever worked with in my career. So honored and proud to have him be part of this project. At the end of the finished mixes, I asked for input from my friend music producer Shele Sondheim and his wife graphic designer Victoria Sondheim. V, as I affectionately call her, listened to the music and expressed her feelings in the cover of “WallyWorld” through her unique graphic design talents making WallyWorld complete!!

All of the artists I have mentioned here gave me the fuel and inspiration to embrace and fulfill my vision to complete this CD. Their love of music and abiding friendships were at the heart of WallyWorld. I am truly blessed and grateful.

As a musician, constantly traveling the world, my "mental recorder" and creative curiosity has absorbed music with grooves from Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Africa, Brazil, Martinique, USA, the Far East, India, Europe and many other countries, cultures and ethnicities. This music experience created the Gumbo - like stew called “WallyWorld,” a stew with distinctive flavors. At this point in my life after years of savoring music from musicians, cultures, cuisines and the natural beauty from all over the world, my music has become a reflection of who I am.

Thank you for reading. Please enjoy WallyWorld! Feel free to travel to far away places through my music!
