Deft and upbeat performance by a talented duo.
The challenge of a jazz duo is to present a full ensemble sound with musical variety and still cook. On Walt & Jenny: First Time Around, guitarist Walt Sopicki and bassist Jennifer May do just that. This is a very deft and upbeat performance by a talented duo. Walt’s solo lines are joyous and well constructed and Jennifer provides a rock solid foundation as well as some inspired bass solo work. My favorites are ‘Lucky Southern,’ a seldom heard tune by Keith Jarrett, and the Miles Davis standard ‘All Blues’ which Jenny sets up with an interesting intro before launching into the familiar bass line. ‘I Can’t Get Started’ is a nice showcase for Walt’s Wes-inspired ballad chops and he also pays tribute to the master on Montgomery’s own composition, ‘Road Song.’ This fine collection closes with an unusual up-tempo rendition of the Jerome Kern standard, ‘Yesterdays.’
