That jazz pianist Sean Wayland should make an out-and-out pop album should come as no surprise. He has released a CD of other people's pop songs before (Stolen Van) and named a tune after Midnight Oil guitarist Jim Moginie. Nor should it come as a surprise that some tracks have a raw, "demo" quality, especially when Wayland is singing. He has often seen a cheeky value in releasing whatever happened when the microphones were open.

The songs are attractive, swinging between naive pop and earthier funk, often with a certain wryness to the lyrics. Half of them enjoy the more substantial singing talents of guests such as Lily Dior (five tracks), Virna Sanzone (two), Justine Clark and Robyne Dunn (one each). The all-star players include guitarist James Muller and drummer Hamish Stuart, whom you can hear assembled with the singers at the Basement on October 30.
