ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Buffalos were once on the edge of extinction, but have bounced back nicely. That optimism paired with reflections on the precariousness of life can be found in the music of We Are Buffalo. They are as likely to write about the loneliness of the human condition, as they are to sing about the whimsy of Buttering Up the Bread. The parallels between buffalos and humans, rather than geography inspired the name.

Take a reflective singer songwriter with a love of language, a virtuoso musician with a strong artistic bent and a gifted percussionist with a thriving inner child and you have the makings of a saucy eclectic blend and brand of music. These musicians are eminently comfortable fording the multiple musical tributaries of numerous styles and influences.

Michael Horwitz was a military brat who lived overseas in Europe and Southeast Asia. In his high school days, he joined a gang. While he reveled in being a wild child, he could see the limitations of that existence and ultimately found refuge in the burgeoning music scene of his adolescence. Today he has a portfolio of 400 compositions, including musical theater scores and non-secular music. His music has been published nationally and internationally. As a solo artist, Michael was described as one “…who treads the sacred ground of Leonard Cohen and those other rare singer songwriters who give us a glimpse of the ineffable through their music." Michael is captivated by language. So much so that he decided to do graduate studies in linguistics. Today his understanding of language is in service of the music of We Are Buffalo.

Richard Brooker was a child of the Detroit music Scene. A working member of the musician’s union by age 14, this multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire began opening for top acts such as Procol Harum, Country Joe and the Fish, Ry Cooder and Weather Report. He coaxes music out of his guitar in DADGAD and other altered tunings playing a bevy of styles and genres always with his own original character. Richard’s musicianship can also be heard in his unique and expressive mandolin style. A torrent of notes or a slow sweet bend is all under his command. Kelley Martin of Acoustic Pie Radio said, “Listening to the workings of Richard’s mind and fingers is pure acoustic pleasure.” Richard’s artistry extends far beyond music, as he is also an award winning animator and motion graphics artist. The EP cover designed by Richard only hints at his immense talents.

David Kane grew up in New York where he was exposed to a mélange of music. Smitten, he ravenously pursued a degree in music at the University of Michigan. This melding of a passion with a new found skill set enabled David to become adept at playing all types of music: orchestral, musical theater, jazz, rock and all styles in between. He has played everything from Stravinsky to Sondheim along with a dose of Basie and a sprinkling of Garcia. David has performed with the Ann Arbor Symphony; Off Broadway productions of Company and Pippen; former MC5 bassist Ray Davis; pianist and composer Michel Ochs, among others. He joyfully spans the spectrum from jam bands to jazz bands. While he may be fully absorbed in laying down a tight rhythmic pulse, David, the person, always exudes warmth and playfulness.

Two years ago, they met and coalesced as an acoustic group. Now, We Are Buffalo is ready to share their vision with their debut EP titled, Between Now and Then.
