ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
In 1989 Larry Nickel nearly died of viral encephalitis. Emerging from a coma after 15 days, Nickel wrote and arranged 22 compositions for choir during a long coqnvaslecence. It was as if the near death experience compelled him to focus on a project that had always been moved aside because of life's busyness. (have you seen Mr. Holland's Opus?)

Tony Funk had recently graduated from the University of British Columbia with a music degree and Larry was really impressed with his conducting style. So the two met for breakfast and made plans to produce a CD. Tony gathered friends and family, (some from the Funk side and others from the Nickel side), those who could sing well, and created a choir that could really tune and blend. This was a choir that could put their hearts into the singing and convey the content of the music. The group had eight rehearsals and then recorded the album "Songs My Father Taught Me". Larry and Tony then decided to name the choir "West Coast Mennonite Chamber Choir".

Long story short, the choir went on to produce 12 more albums - over a period of fifteen years.
