ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Tom is an excellent whistler and singer. He began whistling as a child to pass the time. It came naturally to him. People always commented on his whistling, so he stuck with it. By the age of 30, people began calling him "Whistlin' Tom" and that name has stuck with him. In Philadelphia, when he was tending bar on South Street, customers would specifically visit the bar just to hear him whistle their requests. Philadelphia based, Evening Magazine and it's national affiliate, PM Magazine, picked up on this and then invited him to do segments on their shows, which he did. He performed often in Philadelphia and, at one time, established a telephone answering service called "Whistlin' Tom's 24 hour Hot Line for Listenin' to Whistlin'", where he would receive an average of 1200 calls per day from people throughout the United States and Canada to hear a friendly little whistlin' melody complete with piano, guitar and, drums.

Tom now resides in Key West where he has performed at the Mallory Square Sunset Celebration for many years. Tom often performs throughout the Florida Keys for various community groups, benefits, and fund raisers. He appears in the Key West Video Postcard and The Key West Kaleidoscope, videos featuring various "characters" in Key West.

In the summer of 1998 he whistled his way around Europe on a "European Tour" spending three months traveling by train and performing in many cities in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Austria. He performed both on street corners and in the various "Busker" festivals that are popular in Europe during the summer months. For the past six years he has regularly performed for the Elder Hostel in Key West, which is sponsored by Barry University of Miami.

Tom is a pucker whistler with a three octave range. There are various types of whistlers such as the pucker whistler, the tongue and teeth whistler, the tongue and palate whistler, and the ventriloquial or, throat whistler. The usual range of the average whistler is an octave to an octave and a half. Two octaves is pretty good, two and a half very good, and three is excellent. Most whistlers whistle only on the out breath but, some whistlers whistle both in and out and still retain pitch and tone as does Whistlin' Tom.

Elaine Silver's voice is in top form here, her flexible velvet soprano, warm, full and rich. She sounds fabulous whether she's singing lead or blazing a trail through an intricate harmony. She also contributes great guitar playing. Thouroughly enjoyable.

Puckulations Plus Has Given Me Hours Of Entertainment
This CD has a permanent place in my car CD changer. I listen to parts of it several times a week. When I'm driving alone I try to whistle along with Tom. From this I've learned that I'm not the world class whistler I thought I was. But it's fun to try to keep up with Tom or improvise around him. My favorite numbers (in order) are: 'Ain't She Sweet', 'We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye', 'Mocking Bird Hill', 'The Sailors Hornpipe', 'Teddy Bears Picnic', and 'Under Paris Skies'. At first some of these tunes will sound old fashioned or childish, but they'll grow on you. I highly recommend this CD to people who like to whistle or listen to good whistling.

An original masterpiece of the whistler
This is the best of a number of whistled CD's I recently bought. Under Paris Skies and On the Sunny Side of the Street are masterpieces, brilliantly arranged and accompanied, and are my favorite tracts and worth the CD alone. I liked the vocal tracks too, Tom a tenor- the kind that sings narrative ballads and Elaine a powerful folk singer. The Carribean Fantasy is the most unique with lots of Key West character. I Forgot to Say I Love You is fairly sappy, and Teddy Bear's Picknic seems rather childish and has a 80's style synthesizer background. Hence I will be stubborn about the fifth star. None the less, it is one of my favorite CD's and represents the finest of whistling.

Thought it was terrific.
My husband's whistling bothers me----when I heard this I got it as a tutorial for him. Hope it works.

My birds love this CD
I purchased your CD within the last 2 years and I never took the time to let you know HOW GREAT IT IS.
I got it basically for the 4 birds that we have acquired.
2 African Grey's, 1 SenagaL, and one old, mean 32 year old parrot that was in our friends family forever, which he gave it up due to his girlfriend.

We live in Naples, both of us used to live in Key West years ago.
Anyway, I was just told that Max, one of the grey's was trying to sing one of your songs, so I just put it on and was on the porch and I sang along with you.
I can whistle...not like you... but the birds are picking it up.
I want to let you know how much enjoyment I get from your CD and I hope you are putting out another. Let me know, because I will buy it.

Admiringly,

Sally Swan
