Album Notes
His new release, “Shaken Tree Blues”, opens with “Dos Teresa” a Latin tinged instrumental. The guitar and haunting muted horn interplay over a funky back beat setting the mood for things to come. “Talk is Cheap” is a straight up blues rocker that sounds like something from a bye-gone era and is sure to get your feet moving.

Multi-Grammy nominee Mark Hummel makes a guest appearance in “Everybody but Me”, raising the roof with his ultra hip harmonica style.

May weighs in on vocals, guitar, bass, kalimba and ocarina in “Don’t Quit Me” showing this music veteran’s ability to fuse a world music vibe with traditional blues. “She’s Leaving” is a haunting minor groove; its eerie edge is reminiscent of the late Skip James.

The accordion and dobro in “Greta” bring a little flavor of the bayou to this country blues tale of a callous two timing woman in a hurry to move on. “My Story” offers an insight into how a serial-song writer turns life’s chaos into music. In “Shaken Tree”, May’s playful ukulele serves as a distraction from his woeful warning of mankind’s impending doom.

Finding the body of a murdered woman near his rural home was the catalyst for “Heart Break” a song about a love lost to a serial killer. The story and the instrumentals evoke strong emotions of sorrow and regret. “Going Home”, is a bitter sweet song about facing the end of life’s tumultuous journey with courage and enduring faith. After taking the listener on a roller coaster ride through some of darker parts of life May once again changes up, leaving the listener in a better place.
