Album Notes
This is an SATB (Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass) choral spoken-word “rap” takeoff on “For Unto Us a Child is Born” from the MESSIAH. I was commissioned by Reformation Lutheran Church in Westminster, CA to create a Christmas program (a cantata called THE BIRTH OF CHRIST: PROPHETIC PRONOUNCEMENTS AND ANGELIC ANNOUNCEMENTS). At the time, HAMILTON was bursting onto the scene and I was taking a cardio dance class. The music there was very loud, so I was wearing earplugs. It seemed like the lyrics were really dirty, but I couldn’t be sure because of the earplugs. And then I got the idea of a HAMILTON-like piece, with clean words, for church!
Regarding the commission, I thought, “What would Handel do?-let’s not re-invent the wheel”, so I thought of doing a “rap” version of the MESSIAH. This piece, WONDERFUL COUNSELOR, THE PRINCE OF PEACE, is a movement from my cantata, THE BIRTH OF CHRIST: PROPHETIC PRONOUNCEMENTS AND ANGELIC ANNOUNCEMENTS. It’s also similar to the “Geographical Fugue” by Ernst Toch.
Sheet music is available at http://bit.ly/2Bx3EKN . When performing this piece, please place the singers in sections according to their speaking, not singing voices. This recording features a small group, but the minimum group size should be 8 women (4 sopranos and 4 altos) and 4 men (2 tenors and 2 basses). Thanks to my voice students and John Frederick Jones, narrator, for this rendition.
