Album Notes
Released in October 2003, Born With A Tail is the Woodbox Gang's most ambitious studio album to date. Unlike the group's previous albums, in which 90% of the lyrics were penned by Hugh DeNeal, Born With A Tail features songwriting by several of the other members of the band. This is the groups most diverse album, both musically and stylistically. Alex Kirt, who on previous albums sang lead vocals on only one or two songs, sings several of his own original compositions, including "Check Point Charlie", "Poor Jesus", and "Gingerbread Man". The album also features Dean Theibaud's original tune "God Fearing Woman", on which Dean sings the lead vocal. Born With A Tail also features "Sinner's Love", which is the first composition the group recorded that was written by the group's lap steel player, Pete McRaven. Born With A Tail also features a huge 32 page full color booklet including lyrics, artwork, photos, and more.
BIOGRAPHY: From the village of Makanda in extreme southern Illinois, in a little hollow called Vulture Valley, comes a "caustic acoustic cacophony" known as the Woodbox Gang. They have skillfully combined the American roots music styles of bluegrass, delta blues, folk, and traditional country with the aggressive delivery of punk rock to create their own style of music to which they have given the name "Trashcan Americana". The band is very interested in experimenting with the combined sounds of various conventional and non-conventional instrumentation to create sonic landscapes specifically tailored to the mood and theme of each composition. Hugh DeNeal, their chief lyricist, uses his poetic talents to craft twisted tales of a dark, yet often humorous nature. The Woodbox Gang specializes in "story telling" songs. The group has shared the stage with artists such as Hank Williams III, the John Cowan Band, & many others. Alternative country icon Jason Ringenberg (Jason and the Scorchers) has been quoted in several interviews citing the Woodbox Gang as one of his favorite new bands.
The Woodbox Gang's influences are as diverse as the music which they perform. The group admires artists such as Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and the Ramones for their enduring inventiveness and their courage to "do their own thing, regardless of what anyone else may or may not be doing." The band's multi-instrumentalist Alex Kirt says "We are influenced by everything we've heard, whether it's a symphony orchestra or a push rod knockin' in an old 350 engine. Just about anything that makes a sound can be used to enhance the mood of a tune." This idea can be heard on any one of the group's officially released 4 studio albums & 2 live albums on which they've used traditional guitar, mandolin, lap steel, banjo, fiddle, and bass combined with didjeridoos, kazoos, sawblades, gutbuckets, crowbars, ashtrays, and rusty gasoline cans to add brilliant audio hues their musical palette.

An awesome CD by an awesome band! The music makes everyone happy just by listening to it! If you are partying or just hangin' with family or friends, this is a never dissapointing CD with excellent tunes of the supernatural to love gone wrong. The guys from Woodbox Gang are true storytellers, so grab a cup of coffee and get lost....you wont be sorry!!!!

The Woodbox Gang is musically and lyrically brilliant.
The Woodbox Gang puts out intensely high energy stuff that contains some of the most amazing lyrics that I have heard from any band. Born with a Tail is my favorite WBG album and just another example of the brilliant talent that makes this band what they are...every time I put the album in, I feel the need to just pound beers. After you go to a WBG show or buy this album, you will be a fan.

Born with Greatness
Just like Wormwood, this album is packed with GREAT, original songs that will keep your toes tapping.

A music listener's eclectic paradise!
I've heard all of the WBG cds except I've Killed Men, and this supercedes the previous ones. The band once again tops themselves and divurges into new, strange but amazing territory. Whether you want to hear foot stomping tunes or hear the lyrics of geniuses, you will enjoy this cd. This transgresses all genres.

Absolute Top Of The Line Stuff!!!!!
I have this band's first 2 discs and loved them to death...Hell, "Wormwood" holds the record for most time spent in my disc changer...Well, "Born With A Tail" is another absolute top of the line effort from these Ohio-ians. Dark twisted bluegrassy countrified roots rock...or just plain goddamn good stuff!!!! I cannot recommend any band higher than this..why they aren't a world phenomenon I shall never know!!!

Born With a Tail
Where have these guys been all my life. What a fantastic album. Have ordered another two of their CD's to check out some more. This is one I will be foisting on as many people as I can. Hope it doesn't meet with the usual wall of antipathy to my musical choices. Well I like it.

Even better then wormwood!!
Catchy tunes like soul snares set by the devil himself.

It's like visiting your raw and raucous grandpa who gives ya candy!
If'n I could sing and play, Woodbox Gang would be my band.

These guys must be the most politically astute, pleasantly ostentatious, brutally honest, and ruggedly sensitive collection of throwbacks ever assembled.

If you do or don't know what a warshboard is... you'll love this group and Born With a Tail... pardon me, I mean gang.

Born with or without a tail, these guys will make ya swing... as in, back yard tire swing swingin'.
