ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Wright at the Poolside is Anthony Wright and Ray Pool’s first recording collaboration, although they have been playing together for a while. Both feel strongly about the beauty of these classic songs. They are timeless, and deserving of care and attention in the way they are played – to continue the food analogy: the best ingredients in total harmony and served perfectly! It is the way the warmth, clarity and spine-tingling sensuality of the tenor sax dances in perfect union with the keyboard that makes this CD so remarkable.

The collection was recorded over a long weekend in a lovely rural studio down in peaceful Devon, on the edge of Exmoor. They are mostly first-takes, which hopefully preserves that wonderful sense of the artists’ first impression, a warm spontaneity which envelopes the listener.

Anthony worked on the rock and jazz circuit and as a session player during the ‘80s in London and South Wales during the ‘90s. He’s also done a fair bit of teaching and travelling, and now runs a lively cool jazz function band, Anthony’s AllStars (in which Ray also plays) working throughout Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. Other projects he is driving include an embryo six-piece tribute to the clarinet greats such as Shaw, Goodman et al., called That Shaw Thing (watch our website). He is well known in the area as a reeds teacher, covering all genres including classical clarinet, but his forte is improvisational jazz. He arranges much of his band’s music, as well as working on original compositions which will hit the world soon!

Ray Pool has played piano and keyboards for just about everybody! Cabaret artists he accompanied include Frankie Laine, Gloria Gaynor, Roy Castle and Bob Monkhouse. He worked regularly with Madeleine Bell (Blue Mink), and, amongst consistent work for the BBC, Salena Jones for Pebble Mill. He was a long-standing member of the Joe Loss Orchestra until recently - he still works for them, but not as much: freeing up time to work with Anthony.
