ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This is an intimate recording, soul "chamber music". The uncluttered background makes it sound as though Wright is singing only to you.
And he can sing. The man has range (check out Gamble and Huff's, "United"), credibility (taking on "Good Morning Heartache") and dramatic flair (in classic, "Rainy Night In Georgia" he goes from a whisper to a shout lickety-split.
Growing up in a 3 generation household in gritty Troy, N.Y., Wright started studying piano at 7...and also sleeping with a transistor radio under his pillow. Loving to dance and so loving Motown (Yes, B. Gordy's dream became our given: Motown WAS the music of young America, and there are Temps and Vandellas covers here) he also absorbed the melodious British Invansion and the popular music of the previous 2 generations. There's Hoagey Carmichael ("The Nearness of You") here, and 1930's "Body and Soul".
As a teenager, piano-based singer / songwriters, Laura Nyro and Carole King in particular, exerted a strong influence. And who could escape the pull of Billie, Aretha or Nina Simone?
Wright's love of song is broad, and his personal involvement with the lyric makes each song immediate and real. He's been playing Cape clubs for nearly 20 years (and parties, weddings and memorial services) which is to say he's experienced... in all sorts of ways...and sounds it.
In the age of karaoke and big band poses,it's good to hear the saloon singer in his prime; laid-back or world weary, often raspy 'round the edges, communicating real, human emotion :love, longing, joy and regret...and not into the mirror, but to us. Welcome Mr. Wright.

what a voice!
This is music you can really live with. The range of emotions runs hot to cool, but it is so listenable throughout, it can easily be the soundtrack for your day. A good day.

a gorgeous compilation
A gorgeous compilation of jazz and soul standards and originals. Unabashedly romantic, w/ great taste in material. A rendition of "Rainy Night in Georgia" that highlights the chestnut's poignancy.

time-tested -- a keeper!
A definite fave. This is an album you can very happily work to, travel with, rock out to and snuggle up with. Vocals shimmer and soar and voice and keyboards seamlessly intertwine. The tunes range from mellow-roony to transcendent to playful and the (one?) Wright original (a vivid portrait of Switchback Alley) leaves me wanting to tell this gifted song-man three little words: David Write More ;^)

Intimate, ripe but raw, this man's tongue will be in your very own ear
The quirky selections make perfect sense, the instrumentation is restrained but rich, and the order in which the songs come teaches much about the singer and more than a little about the listener. There's an opening, a flowering going on here, a comfort and a joy shared. Need to get centered on Friday night after a ragged week? This is the prescription. Need to wake up real on Wednesday? It's a tonic. Any old time, he'll let you look inside and you'll like what you hear.

Disclaimer: I know and love David for some, um, 35 years.

Relaxing, kick-back, and introspective - thanks, David!
The kind of CD those of us with a few anniversaries on our 29th birthday have been waiting for ... and the kind of CD that those of you who haven't gotten there yet can learn a lot from. Familiar, yet not put-you-to-sleep comfortable, you'll play this one over and over and keep hearing nuances you missed before. It's with me all the time; in the house, I enjoy the music and in the car, it keeps me sane in traffic. Try it, you'll like it!
