Album Notes
"Music From Another Land is more than techno pop flash, more than New Age noodling, and more than music from the Far East; it is exactly what the title says it is, and it is not to be missed."
G Morris, evolution of media USA.

Hot on the heels of “Shueh-li’s Xenovibes” (released Dec 2003/Jan 2004), “Music From Another Land” assembles in typical Shueh-li style, songs and instrumental compositions that bring together classical, ethic, rock, electronica, psychedelic rock and Latin rhythms with special guest Yamaha e-drummer John Anthony Martinez.

is the brainchild of Australian born Singapore show designer, Shueh-li Ong, who coined the word to explain her work as an instrument builder, composer, performer and producer.
Not to be mistaken for just a chick singer, this multi-instrumentalist boldly fuses the sounds of the Chinese GuQin, the Russian theremin, extended synthesizer techniques, the tin-whistle and countless other magical sounds to evoke her signature siren songs.

Besides being known for creating works with a distinctive style, Shueh-li is also recognized as an exponent of the theremin; she chose to study this instrument that is played by shaping precision hand movements in front of two antennas without touching it, and not use it as a gimic effect.

“Only a few people were literally able to handle the instrument as far as composition and music making were concerned. Important players and composers of the Theremin are Russian Lydia Kavina … and Australian born Singapore artist Shueh-li with Xenovibes” ~ automatictext.com Germany.

Shueh-li was born in Melbourne, Australia and received a Bachelor in Music at the Elder Conservatory studying piano with Stefan Ammer (formerly Professor of Piano at the Freiburg Academy of Music, Germany) and Music Technology under Tristram Cary (founder of the electronic music studio at the Royal College of Music LDN). This was followed by post-graduate studies in Interactive Multimedia Performance under Dr Jeff Pressing at LaTrobe University, Melbourne.

Shueh-li’s trademark is in the way she puts her ‘sound’ together, using her instruments (east, west, arcane, classical and new technology) and her intimate knowledge of its building blocks.

“(She) crafts textures, moods and sonicscapes. (Shueh-li) sees herself as one of the myriad results of the experiments in the long-term history of new music.” The Straits Times, Singapore.

“Singapore’s 1st and only diva of the theremin” (Straits Times Singapore) and Moog international artist Shueh-li, is currently in America with the concert version of Xenovibes and on a visa awarded only to “Artists of Extraordinary Ability”.
Joining her as the performing core of XV USA is aforementioned Yamaha e-drummer John, who having caught the Xenovibes bug after being part of the premier at the Old Parliament House (Singapore 2004), cites more vivid musical creations as a good reason to remain "Xenovibed".

Xenovibes the Concert selects musicians who have the discipline of classical training and the flexibility of jazz performance to participate in a stream of consciousness exchange; "it was like taking a musical LSD trip with erotic undertones" ~ H Mills; Concert at the Eisemann Center USA

"I felt like I was in New York or Chicago…the energy and want of the crowd because the performance (Xenovibes) was so addictive and interesting. This was one of the first events I’ve experienced in Singapore over the past 6 years of living here that engaged a respect firstly for its cutting edge contemporary artistic exploration, and secondly a parallel high entertainment.
Shueh-li is a truly amazing talent; informed, professional, warm, diverse, exciting, inspiring. And to witness this artist amongst some amazing peers…was a successful example of collaboration.”
~ K Dahl, Arts Monthly, Australia.

"The event was possibly one of the best ones I've ever seen. Xenovibes music has inspired me to make more music videos based on their music."~ KISD student USA.

“You've inspired me to take my theremin out of the closet!” ~ Randy, Concert at the Palace Theatre USA.

Whilst XV I was the starting point for Shueh-li to document some of her work sensibilities, XV II celebrates the diverse musical cultures that have given us so many wonderful styles in the form of song, dance and film music. “Music From Another Land - XV II” also celebrates live performance in the spirit of music making. Besides loads of of theremin playing for the theremin-fanatics out there, Shueh-li has tried to capture the nuances embodied in the drumming of John Anthony Martinez, while making XV II the album that showcases her virtuosic synthesizer performance styles and her sensitivities to musical genres not already exposed in XV I.
Information on the ~bonus track~ is available on www.Xenovibes.com.

Shueh-li is currently based in Dallas and hopes to have a touring itinerary that will cover your 'neck of the woods', so let us know if you want to see Shueh-li perform in your city and we’ll try and make it there!
