Album Notes
17-year-old Central Valley high school student Xóchitl Morales is a rising voice amongst the California spoken word scene after her poetry went viral with Buzzfeed’s Pero Like Facebook page spotlighting her piece “Latin-Americans: The Children with a Dark Past.” A member of the Los Angeles “Get Lit” slam poetry group, Xóchitl has performed for California Governor Jerry Brown, various arts advocates, and her works have been recognized by NBC News and Huffington Post.

In the midst of her junior year of high school as she studies for classes and preps for entry into college, Xóchitl finds time for the arts. Her father is ex-Mariachi Los Camperos member Juan Morales who leads Mariachi Mestizo, a youth mariachi band that just performed at NYC’s Carnegie Hall – Xóchitl is the assistant director and trumpet player of Mariachi Juvenil Mestizo. Due to her sparse spare time and the overwhelming feeling that her poetry was often contrived by various commissioned pieces, she wanted her debut album, Descansos, to be raw and largely improvised. In two days, she wrote 20 poems; all but two tracks on Descansos are unedited first takes.

The permeating storylines exhibited on Descansos are all very close to Xóchitl; she speaks of her personal experiences with Central Valley culture, people and places. Purposefully not titling the tracks so listeners would approach each with an open mind, Xóchitl begins the album talking about the Central Valley and calling herself out as a fraud as she tries to assimilate in her new town of Delano amongst the existing California residents. Her unfettered monologues shine the light on family and friends’ stories of pesticide poisoning, inequality in the prosperous farming communities, and chicanos from the Central Valley and beyond in love with Morrissey.
