Album Notes
Young MacDonald is a fiddle and cello duo of brothers Will (16) and Lee (14) MacDonald. They've been playing music together for many years. Will has won numerous fiddle contests, including the Swing Division at the Weiser National Old Time Fiddle Contest in June 2018. Thankfully Lee (an accomplished cello player himself, who has won a variety of classical competitions including 2nd place in the Tucson Symphony Young Artist's Competition, and 1st place in the Tucson Cello Congress, 2018) accompanies his brother wherever he plays. Poundcake offers unique and energetic arrangements from a wide variety of musical traditions: Old Time fiddle tunes, Latin dance music, standard jazz numbers, and Bluegrass-inspired arrangements. Will's original fiddle tune Poundcake appears on this first album which was conceived to be a snapshot of these two young musicians exploring life together in the Sonoran Desert where they were born and raised. It is the musicians' hope that listeners enjoy the youth, joy, enthusiasm, beautiful melodies, toe-tapping rhythms, and sibling revelry on Poundcake. On two numbers, Side By Side and Rock of Ages, Will and Lee are joined by sisters Ava, Angel, and Alivea Addleman who sing gorgeous three-part sister harmony. The original arrangement and technically fine performance of Rock of Ages testifies to the bright future these young musicians have together.
