ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Italian Zampogna Bagpipe and Ciaramella Folk-Oboe have been a part of Christmas in Italy for centuries. Many Italians believe that these are the same instruments the shepherds piped on, as they were abiding in the field on the first Christmas Eve. The Carol 'Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle' (He Descended From the Stars), featured on this disc, is believed to have been sung by the Angels to the shepherds the night Christ was born, thus being the first earthly music the child heard. The pipe-playing shepherds have been commemorated millions of time over, in the form of manger figurines found in every household. Take a look- one or more of those shepherds will likely be playing a pipe! Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle is still sung today, at the end of Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve in the Vatican, accompanied by the Zampognari. The zampogna continues play a vital role in the fabric of southern Italian village life, often heard at weddings, special masses, feasts, parties and processions. This CD is dedicated to the Zampognari (Italian Bagpipers) of ages past; their names now lost to time, who left their homes, villages and towns in southern Italy for greener pastures in Northern europe, the British isles, and North America. Especially close to our hearts are those who journeyed to the USA, from whom we humbly attempt to pick up the torch to continue this beloved tradition. Sauti e Buon Natale!
