ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Hū - to rise, swell, effervesce. Hū ka Pele - to pour forth lava, erupt. Hū mai ke aloha no ka ʻāina - love for the homeland swells forth.

The rising and pouring forth of love for place - the ʻāina - land, through song is a long standing tradition in Hawaiʻi. It is this paradigm that I intend to exemplify. The mythical symbolism ever present in Hawaiian music moves and excites me and I strive to bring this same essence to all the music I write and perform.

In the first song Kūlia Kukui, the verse Kōkua mai hū ka Pele, asks for Pele - Goddess of the volcano, to pour forth assistance, Ame Kahoʻolawe aʻo Kanaloa - and asks Kanaloa God of the sea and carrier of the torch, to ignite Molokaʻi nui, ʻāina o kukui, mālamalama - Molokai, the land of enlightened knowledge.

Being a native of Hawaiʻi, I feel it is my kuleana, right and responsibility, to perpetuate what I believe to be the laws of Hawaiian cosmology: we are all united by Energy, we are more than physical beings, we are here to live in harmony with God and Nature, and
that our words, prayers, chants, and songs reflect our acknowledgement of the divinity of all things and all people.

Enjoy these songs, let the vibration of Aloha flow through you and land in your heart. May you be blessed and nurtured by this music.

Beloved Hawaiʻi, I sing to you and for you, about you and through you.
Me ke Aloha nui…Zelie
