ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Focus: About Zen Carnival, About the Music, Influences, and Band History

Zen Carnival is:

Bill Denison: guitar, vocals, pedal steel, and production
Michael James: keyboards
Chris Paglia: electric and upright bass
Ken Pfeifer: lyrics, lead vocals, occasional keyboards
Carl Puglisi: drums, percussion
and special guest, Bridget Murphy: soprano vocals

Borrowing from Art Rock, Pop, and Progressive Rock, and heavily influenced by Jazz and Rock improvisation styles, Zen Carnival creates beautiful acoustic and electric instrument sounds and rocking tight bass and drum rock grooves.

Ken Pfeifer's voice has been likened to Peter Gabriel, Steve Hogarth (of Marillion), and Peter Nichols (of IQ). Lyrically, the album Lucid Dreamer focuses on the positive, and the dreams of and hopes for love and peace for the Individual and the Planet. Always meaningful, Ken Pfeifer's lyrics cleverly describe themes such as how things can suddenly come miraculously together, how the individual can triumph over their less than perfect circumstances, and, in the album's closer, Love Is The New Way, how we all can simply choose to Love and not be alone.

Rock veterans Puglusi and Paglia, on drums and bass, lay down the grooves with precise abandon, while James and Denison blend melodic key and 6 and 12-string lines. Another true treat is Murphy's vocals...a classically trained soprano, she highlights the musical lines and melody with her ethereal, brilliant voice.

The album's one instrumental, Medieval Suite, written primarily by James, celebrates the fun and artistry of Electric Chamber Rock, with crunchy guitars, acoustic piano, classic keys, and riffs and meter changes a plenty (fans of classic prog acts like Gentle Giant, take note!). James' extensive classical prowess really shines on this cut.

Zen Carnival sounds like: Radiohead, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, Foo Fighters, U2, Rush, Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Sting, Phish, Pat Metheny Group, Steely Dan

Zen Carnival recent Influences: Imogen Heap, Steve Wilson/Porcupine Tree, The Cardigans, IZZ, Joe Satriani

History of the Band: Zen Carnival was born in 1997 in Boston when Bill Denison joined forces with other remaining members of a precursor band. The first complete lineup of Bill Denison, Chris Geihe, Jeff Park, Ken Pfeifer, and Michael James (with backup support from David McNally) performed steadily in the Boston area from 1997-1999. This lineup recorded the band's first album, "Inheritance," released in December 1999.

Career and family moves in 2000 split members between Boston and New York, although close ties remained among Denison, James, and Pfeifer. This ongoing collaboration, along with new drummer Carl Puglisi, led to the release of "Bardo" in June of 2006.

The release of the band's third album, "Lucid Dreamer" (June 2015), includes newest member, bassist Chris Paglia, and explores the kind of new ideas that new friends inspire.
