Album Notes
Zen Gallery - Revival
Zen Gallery's CD Revival is an earthy, acoustic-rock offering--with a twist. A collection of adeptly crafted, minimalist compositions, Revival delivers throwback soul and bluesy, acoustic moods.

Sparse acoustic flavors and layered electric guitar textures provide a potent, down-to-earth backdrop for the soulful and bluesy vocal styling of Paul Bracken. Bracken delivers strong, mature vocal performances from start to finish on Revival. His inimitable blue voice is immediately accessible and real, as evidenced by the deeply emotional ballad "And So It Goes." The style and balance of Revival is related in part to Paul Bracken's natural ear for music, timing, and song writing.

As co-producer and cowriter, Richard Cowdrey worked the cutting room on this effort, providing editing, mixing and mastering services out of Zen Studio. As a performer on Revival, Richard Cowdrey provides a range of organic acoustic guitar styles, such as the layered acoustic and slide guitar work on "For the Life of Me." Richard Cowdrey also delivers diverse electric guitar styles and sounds, from the percussive and expressive Edge-type electric guitar work on "Don't Look Down" and the musical epilogue of "Say Good-bye," to dreamy, crisp echo'd lines that end "And So it Goes." Richard Cowdrey also provides authentic, analog tones and feel on the Bob Dylan classic "All Along the Watchtower." While Cowdrey's version follows closely the song that Jimi Hendrix made a part of modern musical consciousness, it borrows strongly from the arrangement by the great guitarist Frank Marino, of Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush.

Steven Thellen, co-producer, provides eloquent and masterful keyboard work on Revival, as well as world-class mixing and mastering work done at his Meritage Studio.

Revival also provides listeners the rare opportunity, until his upcoming CD release, to hear the guitar solo work of Elliott Cowdrey. The song "Wounded Heart" (and "Between the Lines") contains a blistering guitar solo by Elliott Cowdrey. Long a fan of John McLaughlin, the solo promises to be a treat for any fan of rock music and simply a must-hear for any rock guitarist. Elliott Cowdrey also has an upcoming solo project called Metric Tensor (www.telesisprime.com), which promises to be replete with dark intervals, complex harmony and meter, sophisticated structures and compositions, as well as demonstrations of guitar and bass mastery.

David LaTorre provided rock solid backbeats and lush, vintage percussion sounds on Revival. David LaTorre also provided backing vocal work on Say Good-bye and Don't Look Down.

Also on Revival are special appearances by guitar virtuoso Dave Redding and percussionist / songwriter extraordinaire Michael Caisse. Both perform on the song "I'd Like to Know," recorded LIVE from The Plum in Haverhill, MA. Michael Caisse is also a cowriter on two selections on Revival, the aforementioned "I'd Like to Know" and the haunting ballad "Strangers."

The work of Michael Caisse as a songwriter is prolific. His musical ear and sense of style and composition are world-class. That so few of his compositions have been released makes the appearance of the M. Caisse & R. Cowdrey originals "Strangers" and "I'd Like to Know" on Revival all the more special.

A superb example of musicianship spanning many musical genres.
These talented guys have been putting out excellent material for years. It's good to see it finally getting the exposure it deserves. Zen Gallery's Revival is a well-balanced, diverse and artistic effort from beginning to end. Put it in your CD player and press "endless repeat".

Zen Ten has hit gold on this one.
This CD is incredible. The music is as good as it gets! I have listened to this CD over and over again. There is something for everybody here - as a classically trained pianist and organist - I was delighed to find the original music to be so beautifully written, played and arranged. I would encourage every music lover to give this one a try.
