ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Singing village folk songs in Bulgarian, Croatian, Georgian, Macedonian, Turkish, Ukrainian and Resian, the language of ethnic Slovenes living in Val Resia, Italy, Zhena Folk Chorus recreates the mood of a "sedenka", a rustic work party enlivened by singing and musicians playing traditional instruments. "Sedenka" is Zhena's second CD, a collection of songs that include endangered magical chants from Chornobyl, Ukraine, thrillingly visceral polyphonic sounds sung with friends from the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia and Turkish tunes of earthly passion and heavenly devotion accompanied by guest musicians from Turkey. The distinctive "white voice" of Bulgaria is heard in songs in which the voices imitate the sound of a village lad's flute at a "sedenka" as well as the tears and wails of a man who has lost his first love and for Rufinka, a young woman who lies dying on a mountaintop. The lively rhythm of a Macedonian song about a girl who is "like a beautiful apple from the town of Tetovo" is enhanced by a drummer on darbuka and the raucous good humor of a tarantella-like tune from the Slovenes of Val Resia, Italy features a fiddler and enthusiatic villagers pounding sticks and hollering at the echoing mountains.

The women of Zhena Folk Chorus ("zhena" means "woman" or "wife" in Slavic languages) have been singing together in the greater Los Angeles area for almost twenty-five years. The chorus perpetuates the rich village choral and cultural traditions of Central and Eastern Europe and beyond, heightens awareness of this beautiful and vigorous heritage and signifies the primary role of women in preserving this important genre of world music. Every Zhena performance is a village experience with songs representing a wide spectrum of ethnicities and vocal techniques, authentic museum-quality costumes and an engaging narrative. Performances include Getty Center, "World City" at Disney Hall's Keck Amphitheater, World Festival of Sacred Music, numerous universities, museums, festivals and special events throughout
Southern California.
